image size limits
-
I understand that to display with a given blog template, there are image size limits and they generally seem to be about 500 pixels wide. I have a need to publish images two or three times that width. Is there a way?
Yes, I know that users will probably have to scroll to see my entire image. In this case I am publishing star charts and they simply aren’t useful in the small sizes – much the way a map isn’t useful if too small. Scrolling isn’t an issue. People scroll within Google maps all the time. Displaying the largest image possible, then, ismy goals. Ideally I would treat the 500-pixel image (460 pixel-whatever) my blog template limits me to as a thumbnail and a person would click on it to display a large, scrollable image in a new window.
I would like to do something along those lines. I know how to do it – with HTML and JS, but that would require sending people to another location outside wordpress.com. I’d like to keep it all within WordPress if possible. I don’t see a way to do this, but perhaps I’m misisng something simple and obvious???
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Publish a image that fits the post area and then link it to the original at the size you want.

When you insert the image into the post, just make sure and click the “file URL” button and it will link the thumbnail to the full-sized image.

I hope somebody can take one more follow-up on this.
I uploaded a picture at 600 pixels in width, allowed Word Press to size it to “medium” and clicked “file URL” as discribed above. (so far, so fabulous.) When I click the smaller image in my post, I get a new window with the image on it. It flashes to the image at 600 pixels wide, then goes back to the image at “medium” size. If I click the image in the new window, it grows to it’s real 600-pixel-wide size. Can I make it open that new window and stay at the larger size?
Thanks in advance. This forum is very useful.
Here’s an example: http://joannetaeuffer.com/about/
it’s the first photo at the top of this page. -
I’ve done more testing and I think the answer is: screen resolution. It appears that the graphic resizes itself based on the size of the new open window. I keep my monitor at a low res (avoiding the need for computer glasses) but when I “up” the resolution, the graphic is resized in the new window to a BIGGER size…still not full size unless I click on it.
So…if anybody has a better answer than that, let me know. Otherwise, I’m going assume it’s a feature not a bug and live with it.
