Image sizes within posts

Hello! I post links to flickr images within my posts all the time. When I am editing, I align the images left or right and wrap the text to the side of them, and they look great in the edit screen. However, when I hit ‘publish’, the live blog post contains image that runs the full width of the blog text (and sometimes more than that).

How do I size my images within a post so they reliably stay small, and not full width? Back in the day I used to do this using HTML (img tag) and setting a width. But the world has moved on and apparently I now have less control than I used to!

Many thanks in advance for any advice. PS I am a bear of very little brain, please keep it simple.

Hi there, can you share a link to a post so we can see what’s happening? Thanks.

Sure! Sorry I didn’t do that.

In this link there are 2 images. The first is aligned left, the second is aligned right.

You can see the first image is just huge and although I aligned it left it takes up the full width of the blog entry. The paragraph after it is hinky and the first line is indented weirdly (this may or may not be true depending on your screen size and what device you’re using of course).

The second image drops down below the side menu and therefore has room to actually align to the right. But it’s still huge. I just want to be able to post smallish images in with my text, not great big showstoppers my readers have to scroll past.

I hope this info helps you to understand my issue. My blogs that contain images really look pretty bad. Which is a shame.

    Thank you.

Hi again, it looks like you’re using the flickr embed block for those images https://wordpress.com/support/images/flickr-photos/ With the Embed block the image will go the full width of your theme’s content column. It also automatically links back to flickr, which I think is still one of the conditions in their terms of service.

Have you tried using “Insert from URL” in the Image block instead https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/ That should allow you to align the image or make it smaller, but you’d have to link it back to the flickr page manually by adding the flickr URL link in the image.

Give that a try and post back here if you need more help.

    Hi Jennifer,

Well I tried various methods and the one that works seems to be to create an image block, (I was creating a flickr block), and actually upload the jpg to wordpress, and then you can actually manually drag it to whatever size you want. It takes a bit of trial and error checking you haven’t made it a really annoying size for phone browsers, but with a bit of practice that will become second nature, I’m sure!

I long for the old days when you just typed in the HTML, but you gotta go with the flow! Thank you so much for your help! Your advice made all the difference.

    Rachel.
