Image Sizing

  • OK! So, I’ve found it’s something that’s only happening on newer sites, which would explain why my test sites (both older) aren’t having any trouble. I spun up a new test site and was able to duplicate the issue.

We’re filing a bug report. In the meantime, the best workaround is to use the width and/or height settings to control the displayed size of the image, and we’ll update you here when we’ve found a fix. I hope this helps!

I assumed that everyone would always be on the same software version. It’s interesting that we’re not. How old do you have to be to be in the clear of this bug? My ‘main’ blog (afflicted just the same) dates back to 2017 and has hundreds of screwed up posts and hundreds of mis-sized images. My more recent blog only has a handful of posts live (but dozens more already finished and scheduled for weekly publishing) – but it is a more manageable task to set the image sizes manually.

I had an overnight response from the email support team: they’ve already bailed out, but at least there’s now an acknowledged ‘bug’ and it’s not anything I’m doing. I still don’t understand how the Reader manages to show my images full width, but at the specified resolution – that’s a bizarre combination of parameters. My instinct tells me that determining why that is will lead to the bug, but I’ve no idea how the relevant team addresses such bugs, so I’ll wait and see what happens.

If this issue afflicts all users since at least 2017, I’m astonished that I’m the only person who is bothered by it. I have a separate issue, relating to image sizing, but I’ll raise that with the email team and not mention it here.

Thank you for your continued interest in the issue.

  • If this issue afflicts all users since at least 2017, I’m astonished that I’m the only person who is bothered by it.

Me too. Can you link to the older blog so we can look for commonalities there? One of my blogs is from 2011 or so, but the onlyatest blog is newer than 2017.

We are all running the same WordPress version, but we may well have different default settings depending on when our sites were created.

Oh, and, clarifying: email support didn’t bail; I’d consolidated the requests, though, so that the information is in one place.

My main blog is at https://justafewrecipes.wordpress.com/2023/07/16/bakewell-pudding/

That recent post is a good example of the issue. The first image (of a Bakewell tart) is sized as a medium image (set at 200×200 in media settings). It appears at full column width and the HTML contains exactly the same extended form as the other problem posts. That wouldn’t matter, if the code worked.

As you mention it, if email support didn’t bail, someone owes me a response to my last message. I was asked for very specific information and provided it. Just sayin’.

  • A lot of it looks similar to the questions here; do you mean the one about the reader?

I assume that is separate but related, so we’re digging into that as well.

  • So, for the reader:

    • I’m using Chrome current + Mac current
    • For me, your images there are showing up in “postcard” format (1200px width, just above the excerpt). So they are being resized somewhat, but more to what I would expect to show in the reader. They’re still high quality for the size they’re displaying:

Let me know if that’s what you see, too, and if you’ve got related questions that still need answers aside from the bug we’ve spotted.

  • Also, thanks for the 2017 blog link; it’s noted in the case.

Regarding the Reader, the screenshot you included is of Recent posts from blogs subscribed to. I’ve no problem with what appears there. Images appear in a mosaic of up to four, and if there are more than four in the post, just one is shown, with left/right selection arrows underneath, so that you can scroll through them. They always appear in the same landscape ‘postcard’ view and are frequently significantly cropped.

However, if you select an individual post (still in the Reader), my issue soon manifests itself. I’ve already set manual width attributes to the images from three August posts (of which ‘Summer 2023’ is one), but if you open it, anyway, and look at the paragraph block beneath the 2nd H2 heading ‘Looking Forward’, you see a right-aligned ‘medium’ image wrapped by text. There’s nothing wrong, there, but it usefully (to me) illustrates that the Reader supports images wrapped with text.

If, instead, you scroll down my blog posts to that of July 16 (4th one down, as of today) ‘Bakewell Pudding’, you’ll see an example of another ‘medium’ image not behaving as it should. The fuzzy image of a Bakewell tart should be right-aligned and wrapped by the paragraph text which immediately follows the image as seen in the Reader. The interesting behaviour is that while the image size is wrong, the resolution ‘medium’ has been applied – which is why it’s fuzzy. My earlier thought (which may be wide of the mark) was that examining why the image appears in the reader at the right resolution, but at the wrong size, whereas when viewed directly from the blog the same image appears at its intrinsic resolution, but squashed into the available column width, might point to the underlying issue.

One other small thing: I notice that in both views, the right-aligned image does not actually quite fill the column width – there is a small amount of white space to the left, as though the image is slightly indented. And that’s odd.

As far as email support is concerned, I can’t see any point in pursuing the issue, further – so let’s not.

  • Could you share reader links for each of those? Also, no need to re-modlook the thread; once staff has been involved, we’ll see the replies.

Right: The ‘medium’ text-wrapped image from my latest post appears at the right size (and the right resolution), but only after setting the image width individually:

    Summer 2023 ‹ Just a few recipes ‹ Reader — WordPress.com

Wrong: Another ‘medium’ text-wrapped image from an earlier post appears at the wrong size (but the right resolution):

    Bakewell Pudding ‹ Just a few recipes ‹ Reader — WordPress.com

Here’s the same image directly from the blog. The sizing issue remains, but the resolution is that of the original image at its intrinsic size:

Bakewell Pudding – Just a few recipes (wordpress.com)

There are 200+ other instances of this issue, and I see no purpose in sharing reader links for each of them, as requested – but perhaps that’s not what you meant.

That’s interesting. I followed the links in my last message to make sure they worked, and the appearance of the first image has changed; the picture no longer appears right-aligned and wrapped with text:

  • Hey there,

Many thanks for that additional information!

I’ve added this to the bug report also as it could be related. We appreciate you flagging this to our attention, and it has been escalated.

Thank you also for your patience whilst we look into this for you!

It’s been a month since I raised this issue. Is there anything to report by way of identifying & resolving the problem? Thanks.

  • Hi @clivesharrison; apologies. I think they’re trying to sort out what’s causing this to happen on some sites and not others.

I’m going to see if I can apply a temporary fix to your sites for the time being. Thanks for your patience!

  • I’ve applied a temporary fix for thumbnail and medium images on your site, and we’ll update you when the bug is resolved fully!

The appearance in the reader is likely a separate issue: I understand that it will normally skip most styling and layout and just show the text and images, optimized for viewing on a phone since that’s where most of our readers read. If those images used to float and wrap in the reader and they don’t anymore, would you be willing to create a separate thread for that? Add the Modlook tag, and you can link to this one if you’d like, but they should be separate issues. Thanks in advance!

I believe I have the same issue on another site created several years ago.

For example At https://aniridia.org.uk/2023/09/02/conference-2023-amys-experience-as-a-first-time-attendee/ the 1st and 2nd pictures are supposed to be medium size, right aligned with text wrapping around.

  • Thanks @aniridianetworkuk I’ve added this instance to our existing report. Developers are still investigating so we don’t have a fix at this time but we’re happy to update this thread (and everyone who is participating) as soon as we know more.

    Thanks!

  • This took a bit to resolve since it was randomly affecting some sites and not others, but I think we got to the bottom of this, and it’ll work as expected. Please confirm whether images look right to you now that this is fixed. Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

I think our images are now behaving as expected.

When set to medium size and right aligned they appears as expected not full width.

    Thank you

A curate’s egg: good, in parts.

    Look at https://justafewrecipes.wordpress.com/2023/05/14/viennoiserie-ii/

If I remove the manually specified width and height attributes for the three right-aligned images that appear inset with text, and rely on the resolution presets, the images (and captions) appear to behave as expected when the ‘thumbnail’ attribute is selected. The first two images are configured thus, captioned “A book fold” and “Pains aux raisins”, but I have sized the third image as ‘medium’, which I have configured as 200 x 200.

That third image now has white space to the right, but the caption is centred as though the image had the width that would include the white space. Here’s a screenshot of that section, as rendered in MS Edge:

The image does seem to render at the specified resolution, which should improve page loading speed, but the alignment is not as intended. You had mentioned, earlier, having applied some temporary fix: could it be that they are now in conflict?
