Image Sizing

It occurred to me that the image size ‘implied’ by the white spacing and caption centering is 300 x 300: the ‘default’ value for a ‘medium’ image in the site-wide settings. I have a user-selected alternate value of 200 x 200, and perhaps the value is getting ignored.

If I go to settings and change the values back to 300 x 300, save the settings and view the post again, nothing has changed – although I’d expect the image to have resized to 300 x 300. It does change, but only if I open the post for editing, temporarily select a different ‘size’ and then select ‘medium’ afresh. The image changes to 300 x 300, and when rendered in a browser, the image IS that size and with a centred caption.

If I change the settings, again, to my preferred 200 x 200, and view the post again, it remains at 300 x 300. Is that behaviour ‘by design’? Does the image size inherit the value set in settings at the time the individual post is saved, and have that value persist (although it isn’t visible anywhere) even if the image size parameter is changed in settings? Anyway, having re-edited the post to force the size to go back to 200 x 200 and see the original problem restored: the image IS 200 x 200, but occupying the horizontal space (only) of a 300 x 300 image, with the caption centred as though it were a 300 x 300 image. That’s odd behaviour.

    Hi there! 👋🏼

This is most likely the result of your site having the CSS fix we applied earlier.

To confirm this, navigate to Appearance → Additional CSS, remove all 8 lines from there, and save changes.

This way, your custom dimensions will be effective.

Yes, that has resolved the sizing image – thank you.

I’m left with one sizing issue. In the post https://justafewrecipes.wordpress.com/2023/05/14/viennoiserie-ii/ the image directly below the H2 Heading ‘Xuixos’ is an image, sized large and with the (new?) ‘Expand on click’ option set to off (as illustrated below):

However, the ‘Expand on image’ feature is actually on. In the following post: https://justafewrecipes.wordpress.com/2023/06/04/viennoiserie-iii/ there is a similarly formatted image (immediately under the H2 Heading ‘Pains au chocolat’). The same feature is also set to off, there, and it is off. What causes the different behaviour and is it under my control?

  • Hello there,

I tested flipping the Expand on click option on and off for the image on https://justafewrecipes.wordpress.com/2023/06/04/viennoiserie-iii/, and it’s not expanding on click with that setting toggled off.

For the https://justafewrecipes.wordpress.com/2023/05/14/viennoiserie-ii/ post, I found that because two smaller images above the Xuixos image have expand on click selected, it causes the Xuixos image to also expand, despite the option being turned off for that image.

This seems to be the current behavior after I tested with other themes and sites. Although I don’t have a timeline on when this behavior may be updated, I have made a report for our developers to investigate.

Please feel free to reply to this message if you have any other questions, and have a great day!
