Image sizing in Rust Grunge

  • Unknown's avatar

    Once upon a time I could adjust my images independently in horizontal and vertical planes without using the Crop tool. Now it seems I only have proportional sizing available to me. All handles surrounding the images result in proportional sizing, not just the corner ones. Any suggestion so I can have this functionality back?

  • Hi there. The image editing tools haven’t allowed the ability to stretch or squish images in one dimension for a while now. I think you can still do it by changing the html code for the image in the text editor (just change the number value next to width or height in the html), but in the visual editor it is not possible.

    The other option is of course to resize your images offline before uploading them.

    I realise neither option is helpful if you want to tweak your image to fit into the text, but that’s how it is now as far as I know.

    This feature has been working fine until a couple of days ago. Seems to be a victim of the recent changes to edit facilities and the awful Beep beep boop!

    I find the bbb tolerable because of the larger field to work within and the scroll bar for the post but find I keep loosing my tags between drafts and have to enter them all over again. I really like creating a magazine look for my posts and wish the image sizing would be defaulted back to how it worked 2 or three months ago. All-time-on only proportional sizing doesn’t work very well for me or may others I would think.

  • I’ll tag this for staff to follow up – I’ve seen several people asking for non-proportional resizing but I cannot recall having seen a staff response on the issue yet. Please be patient while waiting for them to reply.

    No problem with the patience. It just annoying that they once had it and now they don’t . This is the only theme I have ever used so that’s not the problem. It was tough enough before when the visual view, distraction free view and the preview had little in common. The last two were close, but you still bounced back and forth between them tweaking the size. There seem to be no WYSIWYG with the images. Distraction free is close, but not prize. If they just give that back, I’ll be content…..well for a while anyway. Always wanting better.

    Hi @userdand,

    You are correct that this feature does not currently exist in the new editor. It does however still exist in the original editor. If you load that editor (by going to your Dashboard and then Posts >> Add New) and add a new image, you can independently adjust the height and width by holding down the shift key and moving the edges of the image.

    I have put in a note to the developers of the new editor that this is a missing feature that at least one user is missing. They will take it under advisement and may add it back in with future updates.

  • @amightywp
    Could this please be added to the relevant support doc as well? I was also unaware that you can do this by holding shift and the support docs on editing inserted image (http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/adding-images-to-posts-or-pages/ & http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-settings/) does not make any mention of this that I can find.

    Thanks.

    I’m going to add it to my to-do list, but I’m going to hold off on it for now until I get an answer on what is going to happen with the new editor. If it needs a differentiation between the new and old editor, that will require much different notation (as you can imagine).

    I honestly wasn’t aware of the functionality myself until a ticket came in last week. I think it was added in with the recent merge from core (about a month ago), which would explain why the documentation doesn’t reflect it.

    I’ve added it to my calendar to check back in a week. Thanks for the suggestion and attention to detail!

    @kokkieh

    Thank you for your help in this and your subtle indication more than once about tagging the issue. I use tags in my posts but had no idea how using tags here changed the effectiveness of the request being dealt with. I see how you added them and will use them in the future with my tag loss between drafts with the new editor issue.

    @amightywp

    Thanks for your quick response after kokkieh tagged my problem for me. I’ll remember to use tags in another thread I am about to start on another issue, if not two. I do go between using old and new editor for different purposes so I will be giving the shift key function for sizing images a try.

    @amightwp

    Just tired it and it works like a champ. Thanks again.

  • @amightywp
    Understood. In fact a number of support docs should probably be updated re. the new editor, so it makes sense to hold off till the changes are more permanent.

    @userdand
    Tagging threads can also help users with a similar problem find a possible answer, so it’s generally a good idea. Also see the forum Code of Conduct in that regard: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wordpresscom-forums-code-of-conduct?replies=1

    Excellent! I’m glad that it’s working out for you.

    And @kokkieh, thanks as usual for all of your excellent help. You’re awesome. :)
