Image Sizing Trouble
-
Please help! All of my photos are HUGE (way too big for the editing window) after I load them into a blog post, which makes it hard to type. I would be much happier if they uploaded as MEDIUM photos instead of large. Can I change a setting to make that happen automatically? Do I have to re-size them all in the Media Library individually? If so, will they automatically update in my blog post? If I’m uploading them from my phone to WordPress, does that change things? Can I upload them smaller to begin with? I’ve looked and looked around the support site but don’t feel I really know what the best option is. It must be simpler than having to resize them all…help!

Hi!
Can you let me know how you’re predominantly uploading images to your blog posts? While the images are automatically uploaded at full size to your Media Library, you should be given the option as to how large you want them to be when adding them to posts as shown here:

Hi! Thank you so much for getting back to me. I mostly add photos directly to draft blog posts from my iPhone using the WordPress app. I start a post, upload some photos, and then either finish and publish, or save it and return to it on my computer to write it. I don’t even remember the last time I even uploaded photos to the Media Library without first putting them in a post. That being said, does it have something to do with settings and the WordPress app? I would like to continue uploading photos that way. Or, is there a way to upload photos from my phone to the library? If so, do I have to select the size for them individually, or can it be a default setting?

Hi!
For right now, you will need to select a size for them individually. When you upload an image to your site via the app, you should see something like this:
At the end of that code, you’ll notice a snippet like this:
size-fullIf you change that to size-large or size-medium, the image should be scaled down. Can you give that a try?

I tried that, and it didn’t seem to work. Pictures were still huge. I clicked and clicked and couldn’t figure out how to shrink them once they were in the blog post. How can I do that? Also, I scaled them to 300×255 in the media library, but it didn’t seem to change the size in the blog post. Then I deleted them and re-added them from the library, and it posted them as tiny thumbnails, and I had the option to resize them once they were in there. Again, if I add them to the library directly, is there a way to change the size through a bulk action?

I just gave this a try on my side, and it seemed to work correctly. For example, here’s a photo that I uploaded through the app. The original size is 2048 × 1638, but it’s appearing much smaller in the post.
Could you point me to a post on your site where you’ve changed the size portion of the image code without any luck?

When a file is uploaded, it’s automatically uploaded full size. There isn’t an option to specify that you would like the original file size automatically cropped to a certain height:width ratio.

I think that if I’m blogging with the app and I’m only using a photo or two, I can definitely change the image code by hand.
I also just went back into my library, scaled all the pictures I wanted to use in a single post (16) to 300xwhatever and then added them to a post, but they showed up as thumbnails. So, then I had to change them all individually to medium after they were already in the post. What did I do that made them insert into the blog as thumbnails? I really don’t want to have to manually change every photo TWICE every time.
I guess my question is this: if all photos get uploaded full-size automatically, is there a default setting I can choose, or a way to add them from the library that would insert them as medium into a post?
I’m at http://www.thefrozenpineapple.com. I just blogged a few minutes ago ( title: a list (to recap)) and those photos had been uploaded straight from my phone to the post. I then typed the post on the computer and just made the screen tiny so I could see where I was typing and the whole pictures in the blog editing window.
My next post (still a draft) will feature photos I changed in the library that I described above, that added them as thumbnails.
(Clearly, you can tell I’m not exactly an expert at this. Just trying to figure out the easiest way to be able to type in my posts without GIANT pictures all over the place. I really hate it when I can’t see the whole image.)
Thank you for your help!

It sounds like you edited and added these images to your post via a desktop/laptop, not the app. In that case, you’ll want to make sure the photo says anything other than thumbnail here when adding it to a post or page:

No – there isn’t a default setting for this at the moment.

Could you let me know what editor you’re using to edit the posts? Are you using the New Editor, which would have a URL in your browser like this: wordpress.com/post? Or, are you using the Classic Editor, which would look like this: thefrozepineapple.wordpress.com/wp-admin…?
My next post (still a draft) will feature photos I changed in the library that I described above, that added them as thumbnails.
I see several posts after “a list.” Could you clarify which one you’re referring to?

This is the URL I saw when I just went to write a post:
https://wordpress.com/post/21753091/5577/
The title of the post is ‘snovember’ and it is the post I was talking about that added the photos as thumbnails. A few days ago I went back and changed them from thumbnails to medium.
Overall, I just want to know the easiest way to get photos from my phone into a blog post that I can write on the computer without them being giant each time. Does that make sense?

Hi!
Thanks for clarifying! Regarding the post editor on your desktop/laptop, when you add a new image, you should still be able to scroll around as shown here:
The image should not obstruct your view of the text. If you’re seeing something different, please let me know.

The easiest way at the moment is through using the Add Media option in the bottom right-hand corner of the mobile app as shown in the screencast:
You can use the following attributes to edit the size of the image:
size-full size-large size-medium size-thumbnailYou can change the size of those attributes here:
https://thefrozenpineapple.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-media.php
For example, Medium is now set to 300×300. So, if you change the size of the image to size-medium, it should be 300×300 when you publish the post.
