Image Uploading Issue

Whenever I upload a photo to the “Media Library” the response is always “file is empty. please upload something more substantial.”
Is this common? Also, is there a specific image size/quality/dimension required for uploading onto Word Press?
Any and all help would be immensely appreciated.
