Image views

Hi, I’m new to blogging and have noticed over the past few days that, the few hits I am getting, appear to be for images only. I’m struggling to understand this, since I thought it wouldn’t be possible to take a look at an image without first going to the homepage or post. Can anyone help explain? I wondered whether it might be linked to the disappearing images issue I see was happening over the weekend. One of my images randomly disappeared, only to reappear later.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It is possible for image pages to get picked up by search engines, so visitors could get to those pages directly from a search engine. They can also go directly to a post, and then click on the images to view image pages. They don’t have to go to the home page first.

    Hi and thanks.

I’d like to flatter myself into thinking that the images I’ve taken are of such high quality that some one would really want to search them out, but I really don’t think they are and I think they’d be well down the list of the search engine results!

I might be wrong, but I’m guessing that a direct viewing of a post would register on the stats and at the moment the only stats I’m getting are for pure images, which seems odd.

Search engine traffic is just one possibility. Someone could have viewed your blog and clicked on all the images in one post and that would have also produced the stats for the images in your blog.

    That might be it.
But could I just check – and sorry to keep asking – wouldn’t that also register a stat for that post, homepage or something like that – at the moment I am only getting stats for images – and no others, whereas in previous days I’ve had stats for the homepage and individual posts.

The stats are tiny, it’s early days, but this just seems really confusing.

Not necessarily. For one thing, your images could be hotlinked and posted to other websites, in which case you’d get a hit on the image but not on the post. Or if they use Google Image search and just view the image, not the post, then you wouldn’t get the hit on the post.

Ok.. that sounds possible.. having just done a google image search for the latest one “nettles” I went through 21 pages and still didn’t see mine.
Could you explain what hotlinking is (sorry, very new at this) which might help me understand what seems quite odd to me!

Hotlinking is when people post it to their site by using the img code without uploading it at their site: since we don’t pay for bandwidth here, it doesn’t really matter too much. We don’t have to pay for it. But it’s a way for other websites to post your pictures while making YOU host them.
