Image vs. Text and multiple "home" pages

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have a few questions.
First how do I have the image in the post but have the title of the post show in my theme’s page display (over the image that I would like in the post)

Also, can I have two pages that have the layout of our home page – so one can be specific to our wedding discussions, and one can be specific to our honeymoon discussions.

    Thank you

Could you try to clarify this question”? I don’t know if you’re referring to images in posts — you twice use the phrase “in the post” — or to featured images. If the former, haven’t you already accomplished that, here? If you are asking, rather, how to include the title of a post overlaying the featured images (linking to your posts) then the answer is provided in the Theme Options section of the Spun theme support page. The options are available at Customizer > Theme Options. The second option is “Always show post titles over circles.” The support page says, “Check this box if you always want your post titles to appear on the home, archive, and search pages.”

Also, can I have two pages that have the layout of our home page – so one can be specific to our wedding discussions, and one can be specific to our honeymoon discussions.

There is no reason why you couldn’t have two alternate pages with the same layout, but the stipulations you propose present the following difficulties.

    1. You can’t have two homepages. One of the two would need a different URL, for example https://bswedding15.wordpress.com/honeymoon. You could include in each page a link to the other.
    2. The proposal suggests that you want two custom menus each of which can be displayed only on selected pages (perhaps on one page only), or one custom menu only part of which displays on selected pages. If either of these were included options they would be found in the Customizer at Menus. But they aren’t, and therefore such a modifications would require CSS customization.

    @ samfonte,

Your question is unrelated to this topic, so it would be best if you start a new topic. Hint: The Hero demo has no header. In the demo, the website title, tagline, and menu appear over a featured content slider on the front page, which is a static page with the Front Page template assigned.

    @musicdoc1
I am sorry, let me clarify, I see my questions, written quickly, was not very clear! (Furthermore I believe @samfonte was actually relaying back to me a portion of my question that did not make sense)

    Addressing the second question specifically…
Here is exactly what I hope to get while using my current theme of Spun. I would like for our guest to type in our home page (of BSWedding15.wordpress.com) The first page to show up will have an engagement photo of us, along with a small blurb, below will be two links. One link will be specific to post being made about our wedding, the second link will be specific to post being made about our open honeymoon. When you click on either of the link it takes you to a following page that shows the specific topic’s (wedding or honeymoon) blog post.

Is this a feature that can be done while in WordPress.com?

Currently I have our homepage, which shows a photo with a small blurb directing individuals to a menu at the top of the page. However, I would love to make that menu into two links.

Please let me know if this request is more clear from my previous questions.
    Thank you!

I’m sorry if I’m misunderstanding you again.
I wonder if in the phrases “specific to post…about our wedding,” and “specific to post…about our open honeymoon” you meant “posts” (plural rather than singular). If you only want to link those two pages to two specific posts, yes that is easily accomplished. Make a static front page and insert links in the page content (“below will be two links”) to the two posts. See the Links support page.
If you meant “specific posts” (plural) rather than “specific post” (singular) then, no, you can’t precisely do that, because it would involve two separate post streams, or two posts pages to put in different words. However, you may have links in the homepage to category archives pages. If it is category archives pages you wish to link to on the homepage, note that presently these exist as the two top level menu links. These link to the following category archives pages:

The two links you envision in the content of the homepage can easily be created using text links, image links, or both inserted into the content of the homepage. The destination URL of any link you create is up to you. However, such links couldn’t fully replace those in the custom menu because you can’t, as far as I know, create drop-down link lists (or menus) in a post or page on a WordPress.com website.

Great thank you! That is what I needed! Yes originally I want the static front page to have to links that went to another page that showed all of the related post. However I understand I’ll just have to keep the post as is in there corresponding categories. One last question…? When going to the category page, the first circle states “category” with “honeymoon” overlaying it. Is there a way to get rid of that circle or category label? Thank you so much!

    You’re welcome.

Yes originally I want the static front page to have to links that went to another page that showed all of the related post.

You may do this, and retain the custom menu. Or replace the custom menu with one of your own construction in the homepage (text or image links). Example:
    1. In the front page, have two side-by-side images, one labeled “Wedding,” and the other labeled “Honeymoon,” which link to those pages. The labels can be pasted on top of the image links, or appear under them (captions), above them, etc.
    2. Your secondary pages, “Wedding,” and “Honeymoon,” each linked to from the homepage, could contain unordered list links to the posts or pages in this category.

When going to the category page, the first circle states “category” with “honeymoon” overlaying it. Is there a way to get rid of that circle or category label? Thank you so much!

That is how this theme displays the title of each category archives page. If you remove from the custom menu item the navigation label which creates this circle, the link will be removed from the custom menu as well. You’ll need to CSS customization to remove those category circles.
