  Why do i have to post an image to use it in the image widget..Can i delete the post and keep the image in the widget, without deleting that too?

  You can upload images and other media via the Dashboard directly without having to make a new post. You do this by using the Media -> Add New menu. You can then use images uploaded there on the image widget.
