Image Widget broken?

  • Unknown's avatar

Using the Able theme ( wp.com) and discovered yesterday that the Image Widget appears to be broken.

I wanted to change an image in an existing Image widget, but the details input fields are missing ! – the title, caption, size, and most importantly, the URL field. Only the ordering option remains.
Also tried adding a fresh widget, but same result
= I made a snip capture and uploaded to my media library =
    .
I have 2 other blogs in the Able theme, all are affected.
It’s been a good number of months since I did anything with an image widget so it’s unknown how long this has been going on.

In googling research I saw mention of an Image Widget plugin, but plugins are not supported in my theme,

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I found what made the problem.
I was doing everything by way of Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets, as I’d always done for 4+ years, but now that no longer worked.

However using the Customize function, all is well again.
    Thank you for the help.

  • Hi there,

Looking at your screen shot, that’s normal. In WP-Admin if you click a widget, you first select where the widget should be added. Only after that do you get the options to configure the widget.

That said, we are in the process of converting all existing image widgets to the new widget that was introduced in the last WordPress software update. The new widget has fewer options, and allows you to insert images directly from the media library, so it’s no longer necessary nor possible to insert an image into the widget via URL. If you want to hotlink to images not in the library, you’ll now need to use a text widget instead.

We’re in the process of updating the image widget support doc to reflect the changes as well.

    Thanks for responding.
I came across my solution by trying the Customize feature as suggested by one of the info links provided earlier. I was unaware that things had changed and now actually prefer the ‘new’ way of adding an image directly from my library rather than by url.
It might be a good idea to have a reference link to the updated way of using the image widget on the Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets page, there must be others trying to do it the ‘old’ way and feeling
    confused and frustrated. ?

The widget should look exactly the same on both WP-Admin and the Customizer, as it’s the same widget. I checked the widgets you’ve added on the WP-Admin page, and they look the same as they do in your site’s Customizer.

I looked at the screen shot you had in your library, and that showed the initial options when you first click a widget there, i.e. a list of the different widget areas. If you select a widget area there, it adds the widget and expands it so you can configure the settings. The WP-Admin widgets screen has worked that way for quite some time now, so is not a recent change at all.

    Thanks for that feedback :)

In relation to the topic of changes to the image widget, I am also having problems with my images.

If you go to this page: https://athrillaweek.com/douglas-preston-and-lincoln-childs-pendergast-series/ and look at the left side bar, you will see that the images (like Nick’s Pics, etc.), along with text, is cut off on the right side. This is true for all the additional pages which you can find under the heading ‘Search for Authors’ on the main page.

As for the image widget changing, it use to be that one could choose the alignment of the image; left, right or none. That option is now gone. If you tab on edit image, it will bring up a screen that has no choice for image alignment. However, under that screen there is a box labeled Image CSS Class and in the box is the word alignleft, which I assume came from my choosing the align left option before the changes. Obviously it is not aligning to the left.

    Hi vsimon22,

Please start a new thread for your question and add the modlook tag.

Once you’ve done that, we can take a look at your site.

    Thanks!
