image widget won't work

I am adding a photo to my media library but when I go to put it in a widget, it either is sized or formatted wrong. I’m not sure how to fix it.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Jamie.

Could you link me to the image you were trying to add to your image widget? I see you’ve removed the broken widget now, if you could place it back, I’ll be able to take a deeper look into why it’s not working.

    Thanks!

Hi, so I put it back on. It looks much better today (not sure why) but I the whole image still isn’t showing. Just one guy. And there’s two guys. :) Ha. Thanks for your help!

    Hi Jamie.

Thanks for placing the widget back for me to look at!

The Twenty Ten theme’s sidebar is 200px in width, and I can see your image is currently set to 500px. Could you try changing this within the widget’s settings? Change the value in the width field to 200 and leave the height field blank. After you ‘Save’ the changes, the best height for the image will be automatically calculated.

It’s worth noting that the image may appear a little blurry due to its size and the space its trying to fit into. Could you consider cropping the image so that its width is closer to 200px? We have a guide for cropping images in your Media Library here:

Let me know how you get on with that!

I did what you said by changing the width to 200px and leaving heighth blank but now it’s distorted. I tried to crop in the library but it won’t let me. The crop button is shaded and I can’t click it. Is this something I will have to fix outside of wordpress, like in a photo editor of some sort?

    Hi Jamie.

I think that editing the photo outside of WordPress.com and the re-uploading it to your Media Library would be the best option here. If you don’t have a photo editing program such as Photoshop, and you’re using a Mac, you can also crop the image in Preview:

Hi! So I tried to edit it in preview and it’s still showing up distorted. If I had someone resize it in photo shop, what’s an ideal size?

The ideal width would be 200px, as that’s the width of the sidebar area in your theme.

I can see that the natural size of the image is 400px in width and 354px in height. Could you try changing the settings within your widget to 200px for the width and 177px for the height? I think this would scale better and cause the image to appear less distorted.

    Perfect!! Thank you! It worked!

Yay. Glad it worked! Let me know if there’s anything else I can help out with on that, and have a lovely weekend also.
