First, I can’t get my picture to show up on the blog. Downloaded the picture into the media library, but when I select, “Insert into post” it inserts as a link.
I don’t want a LINK! I want my picture to show up.
Second, no photo editing options are given to me after the picture has been “crunched.” The help pages (http://codex.wordpress.org/Inserting_Images_into_Posts_and_Pages) say I should have all sorts of options. I have absolutely zero editing options for this photo.
Help.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The codex is for self hosted WordPress.ORG installs. You have a free blog from and being free hosted by WordPress.COM and those instructions do not apply. What is stated in the WordPress.com support documentation (support link at the bottom of your Admin pages) for Insert an Image You’ve Already Uploaded into posts and pages does apply. Please try those instructions and let us know if your succeed or not.

Ahhh, interesting.
Unfortunately, I checked out the link you provided and it’s basically the same as the “codex” instructions. #4 says, “Once the uploading/crunching process has completed, you will be given the option to edit some settings before inserting the image into the post/page.”
Nope. Tried downloading it a third time (now have three of the same download!) :) This is sort of ridiculous since inserting an image is one of the easiest things to do … right? Shouldn’t this be easy? It’s not like I’m trying to do something fancy with the image. Just have it show up!

Will you please provide us with some details so we can try to help you?
1. How are you connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com? The way you connect to the internet (mobile, satellite, DSL, dial-up) and to your blog, and how many proxy server jumps etc. it takes to connect can cause problems. There maybe be problems with your ISP and/or with the proxy servers.
2. Are you using http:// or https:// see http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
3.Which browser and version of it are you using?
4. Have you tried clearing your browser cache and cookies? http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

8. Do you have another browser you can try?
9. You can use this link to see if your Flash is up to date. http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ If it’s not up to date then this is where to download and install the latest version of Flash. http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

I no longer have the option of uploading documents to my wordpress site. I have used this for 3 years now, and now suddenly there is not a place to attach documents. There used to be a little “sun” looking icon on the toolbar, but now it is not there. It only gives me the option to create a link, and that does not work for word documents or powerpoint presentations.

No software is frozen in time. There is a single icon for all media uploads. Please read this mid-November announcement: Drag & Drop Media Uploader & Flyout Dashboard Menus

1. How are you connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com?
DSL at home. Not sure about work.2. Are you using http:// or https:// see http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
The only internet connections (ISP’s?) I’m using are at my home (secured w/password that’s updated every few months) and on the one at work. Is there a need for me to use https:// ?3.Which browser and version of it are you using?
Firefox. 8.0.14. Have you tried clearing your browser cache and cookies? http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050
Just did. I’ll let you know if this helps.
How often am I supposed to do this? I had problems about a month ago with WordPress (wasn’t able to disable comments) and clearing the cache fixed it. Seems like a pain in the arse to have to do this every time I try and post something on my blog site, but if it’s required, I suppose I’ll suck it up and just do it. Can’t WordPress just find a fix around this?5. Is your browser version up to date? You can upgrade any browser version here. http://browsehappy.com/
Yes.6. Do you have third party cookies enabled?
Unsure.7. Do you have JavaScript enabled? http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654
Yes.8. Do you have another browser you can try?
Yes, I suppose I can try Safari, but WordPress is really going to make me do this any time I want to post something? That’s a huge hassle.9. You can use this link to see if your Flash is up to date. http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ If it’s not up to date then this is where to download and install the latest version of Flash. http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
Was just updated earlier this week.10. Have your tried resetting your router and modem?
It was actually just re-set this AM.11. Have you had any recent operating system and/or security program updates?
Nope. -
Here’s one other hint.
The image is showing up in the “Gallery” and not as an “Image” in the “Media Library.” It shows up as … “other,” I suppose.

Wait.
Worked.
I tried it as a .pdf again and … nothing.
But then I tried downloading it as a .jpg and it gave me all the editing options I was looking for.Is that it? I’m not allowed to use .pdf’s? That doesn’t seem right.

PDFs are not image files. If you want to embed PDFs in your posts, you can upload them to Scribd.
