Imagery
-
Hi,
This is the first topic I’ve started in the WordPress forum so forgive me if this has been asked before or is in the wrong place. My blog is a mixture of rants and creative outpourings (like many right) anyway some of the rants/opinions are about current affairs. To illustrate my point I would like to use a picture say from a newspapers website am I allowed to do this either via link or saving and uploading.
At the very least I would be interested to find out what others do to address this. I haven’t been putting pictures on every post so far but with the advent of the iPad interface it looks so much better if you do.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Virtually all images used by newspapers are copyrighted and you need to get written permission from the copyright holder to use them. If you do not, they can file suit against you for copyright violations, and if they complain to wordpress.COM about you using their stuff without permission, your site will be suspended or deleted.
Bottom line: you need permission.

There are sources of free images and in each base you have to abide by the terms of use. Some require a link back and others don’t. They are only free for personal use. This is the creative Commons search utility and there are various data collections you can access and check out by using it. http://search.creativecommons.org/#
I also have 70 sources of free images on this resources page (scroll down to images (free sources) > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/resources/ -

Beware of Copyrights!
There’s been a lot of discussion about using images and content found around the web and many bloggers seem to have a very dim understanding of copyright law. As ignorance of the law is no excuse and dies not prevent one from being successfully sued, I decided to share this story about a well-intentioned copywriter, who thought it was okay too ignore the law and ended up paying $4000. for a photo he could have licensed for ten bucks. http://blog.webcopyplus.com/2011/02/14/legal-lesson-learned-copywriter-pays-4000-for-10-photo/You’re welcome from me. :)

Thank you for that great link, timethief. So many ‘Net users think that if it’s on the ‘Net, it’s fair game or that it’s not illegal unless you get caught or that “Fair Use” means “‘cuz I want it”.

You’re welcome. I happen to know another person who has w web designer working for him who used a Getty image without purchasing the license. To make a long story short Getty wants thousands of dollars and they are in a court battle over it.

Timethief – I’ve been using images from the Wikipedia Creative Commons site, assuming that anything there is copyright free. But I’m never sure what acknowledgement I’m supposed to include.
Sorry to use you as a resource, but you seem to know the ropes well – so is there somewhere where I can find out what is permissible, and how to avoid making mistakes?
The iPad format makes images so much more important – but I don’t want to do the wrong thing.

One way round all this issue that I can see is that a blogger who is primarily a writer and a blogger who is a photo blogger could collaborate (or you could do both things, but I’m not that talented) It would give the photo bloggers work additional exposure, will full credit)
So if there are any happy snappers out there who think thats a good idea, I’d be more than happy to talk to them.

Assume nothing. Click in and locate the Terms of Use. Learn what the symbols mean CC and read the terms use for any image you use. Note that we cannot include live links in wordpress.com image captions. We must create text links for image credits in the post itself.

Great idea. :) You may want to post a thread in the Off-Topic Forum for that purpose. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/off-topic
