  I am trying to post an image exactly how it looks on another blog. I downloaded / added it to media. When I place it on my blog, it ends up tiny / unreadable. It says it’s only 800 by about 20,000 pixels, which isn’t wide. But where I have got it from, it is right across the page.

  Hi,
  It all depends on your screen size and theme limitations and where you want to use this image. Current theme you are using might have a narrow content column section, and you won’t be allowed to display a full-width image there.

  But on the other hand in you theme there’s a head section and as I see you are using https://epilepsyencounters.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/cropped-cropped-blackbird1.png image which is 2000px wide and 1125px high which is side-wide.

  Yes – your blog has two columns, so if you have a wide image to insert into the blog post – it will be squeezed automatically, to fit into the post content column.
