Hi,
Although, I don’t know what blog or template your using, I will try to help.
From your Dashboard you can, select the blog you want to customize, and then click the Customize button to get to the Customize Screen for your blog.
You can change the blog logo and site icon under Site Identity, the background image under Colors & Backgrounds, and the header under Header Image.
But, if you’re trying to change the images that display when you’re previewing a theme, you must have at least one published post on your blog.
When previewing a theme if you click, Try & Customize or Activate, it will replace the sample posts with your published post.

Hi there, can you let us know the address of the site you are working on?
The reason we ask for your site address is to ensure you are getting the right support for your website. Many people who post here actually need help for their website using the WordPress open source software rather than having a website hosted here on the WordPressdotcom platform.
WordPressdotcom (where we are ) and WordPress are separate entities with different documentation and support forums. You can learn more about that in our support guide at https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
