Newbie question:
If my media settings set for maximum height and width 300 X 300 for medium size images and I upload a picture from my pc or the internet that is larger or smaller but choose to post it in medium size:
Will it only look optimal if I only don’t exceed those px dimensions? What if it’s smaller than those dimensions?
Is it best to edit an image in a picture editor to the recommended size before uploading? What if my image is somewhere in between those dimension sizes?
Finally, if I choose to left align an image, is it practical to use CSS to perhaps make a medium or thumbnail size image to drape the image proportionately so covers more or less than the default for the theme style (in other words, if you want more text wrapped around the image than would normally display)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Sometimes images degrade a bit in quality if WordPress has to resize it, but on my own blog I’ve never really noticed it, so I wouldn’t worry too much. It becomes more noticeable with very large images, but not so much if you’re only a few (or even a few hundred) pixels over those dimensions.
If your image is smaller than those dimensions you’ll probably only see the options for Thumbnail and Full Size when inserting the image, as your image will already be smaller than the size set for Medium. Also note that you can resize images in the editor. Let’s say you upload an image at 800 pixels and you insert it as medium, that is, 300 pixels, you’ll still be able to resize it to 800 pixels or anything inbetween if you want.

Yes. As mentioned, the image editor in WordPress can cause some loss in quality when resizing images. Also consider that most themes can’t display images any bigger than 1200 pixels, so if you upload anything bigger than that you’re simply wasting your media storage space. That doesn’t really matter. I usually upload images of around 600 pixels. That’s big enough so I can use it for the maximum display size of my theme, but small enough so I don’t waste storage space, and as I already said, I’ve never noticed image degradation if I happen to resize one of those images to a smaller size.
I can’t really answer your last question as I don’t understand exactly what you mean and I don’t know much about CSS either. I can tell you that you can use inline CSS (in the text editor) to add some styling to images, so maybe what you want to do will be possible with that.

Thank you very much for the reply; sadly, all my pc pics since 2003 are over 2400 px because my wife (the photographer in the relationship) had always set the camera to a higher pixel level to optimize quality. We had no idea of a blog in the future.
So I have a big project to resize them all; can you recommend which pic editor can handle multiple resizing fastest and easiest?

I use Picasa. You select all the photos you want to resize, and then click the Export icon at the bottom. It doesn’t allow for precise resizing – it has presets – but it works good enough for me. Just pick the first preset bigger than the size you want.
You can resize several images at once and it also has the option to add a watermark to the bottom-right corner if, for example, you want a copyright notice. This way it also leaves your originals alone – it creates the resized image as a copy in a different folder, so you’ll still have the hi-res images on your hard-drive.

I’ll check it out; thank you once again; I just downloaded IfranView; way too many options and much more than I’ll ever want to do

Hi
Forgive me, but maybe you can help me quickly:
I downloaded Picassa and have two major concerns
1) It says if I delete anything from Picassa it deletes from my pc. This is kind of scary and not at all what I would want. What if I now uninstall? It sounds like it will erase my entire pc library? Am I misunderstanding?2) More importantly, I don’t find any option to resize when I click on any picture. Can you guide me?
Thanks

Yes, Picasa acts as a picture manager. Once you get used to it it’s actually more convenient than doing everything manually in the My Pictures folder. If you click on Tools ->Options, in the General tab make sure the “Delete from disk without confirmation” is NOT checked, then it will ask you if you’re sure every time you click delete. If you want to uninstall anyway, that will only remove the program, not your media files.
I don’t find any option to resize
After you select the image, look for the icon marked Export at the bottom of the screen. The program resizes images while exporting them, which creates copy in a different folder.

Thank you once again for your help;
One last question and then I promise to actually start posting and leave you aloneCan you tell me the best widget to use that can act as an “about”? I’d like to use a picture enclosed with a circle (which I’ve created and saved) and some text underneath or above. Do you use an image widget or a text widget? Or something better?
Examples of what I’d like it to look like are on these blogs:

It’s really no bother :)
If you want both an image and text in the widget, you’ll need to use a text widget and insert the image using html. Let me know if you need any help with the code to do that.
WordPress.com also has a built-in widget to display your About.me profile, if you have one of those. It might be simpler, as it contains all the fields you’re likely to use and you can add links to other social profiles there. You’ll just need to set up an About.me profile on that website. See: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
http://wordpress.org/hosting/You cold also insert a widget that contains your Gravatar profile: http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/gravatar-profile-widget/

Hi Kokkieh
I don’t want to use the about me widget because I want different text and pictures than what’s on the about page. I also don’t really want to use the gravatar. I can probably figure out how to add the image via html but I may ask for help with size and formatting :)
enjoy the day !! -
The About.me widget doesn’t show what’s on your about page. It’s a completely different website where you can create a personal profile, similar to Gravatar that you used to create a WordPress account. You can find out more here: https://about.me/
For the text widget, the easiest would be to create a draft post and insert your image and text into that the way you want it, and then copy the html from the text-editor version of the post editor and simply paste it into the widget. Once you’re done, simply delete the draft post.
Here’s also a good starting point for the html: http://en.support.wordpress.com/beginning-html/#images-in-html
