Images and Flickr
-
Totally new, don’t know what I’m doing. My blog is http://bigspoonbakery.wordpress.com
I’ve set up a Flickr account, thinking that I can copy the URL of the photos from Flickr into my posts, therefore avoiding the maximum space issues with the 3GB allowed for wordpress. Is this how it works with Flickr? When I copy and paste the Flickr URL into the “source URL” box for adding media, a red “X” appears, and I can’t insert anything into my post.
How do I use Flickr with WordPress? I don’t want to use the “blog this” feature on Flickr, because it doesn’t look like I’m able to add several images into the same Flickr-based blog post.
I hope this makes sense…

I spent a good amount of time in the FAQ on the wordpress site… turns out the answer to my question was in (of all places) the Flickr site.
Thanks for responding though!

There are also file-hosting sites (such as Fileden). But are you sure you need either such a site or Flickr? Your free 3GB space is enough for thousands of pictures (at least if you take care to upload low-resolution copies).

@jasluttrell if you want to link your photos from your flickr account, you have to go into the “All Sizes” button over the picture you want to link to on your website. Flickr Guidelines says that if you want to use your images outside of flickr, you need to use the first code on that page (1. Copy and paste this HTML into your webpage:), not just the image URL.
Hope that helps someone else who may be looking for this info.

Oh forgot something important-when you grab the HTML code of your flickr image, make sure you grab it for the correct width for your blog. While images uploaded to your WordPress.COM account will resize to your theme’s width, photos from outside WordPress.COM do not necessarily do so. (So I have been advised by Staff at one point.)

Would you really be at risk of hitting the 3GB limit, though? I’ve got 3400+ posts, all with at least one image and am still using less than 5% of my space.
-
Yes, rain. But at max 500 x 375 pixels, how much space could they take up? (And are you still using the 3G or didn’t you get an upgrade along the way?)
-
I certainly didn’t get an upgrade. Why would I? Why would anyone who didn’t need it to host audio and video files? I’ve got FIVE blogs on WP.com; if one runs out of space, I’ll just store the pix at another one, but at this rate it will take something like 35 YEARS for me to use all the storage space in my biggest blog.
-
I only got the upgrade when I wanted to upload videos. But for that, I wouldn’t have. 3G was plenty space for pictures. (Heck, if they let us link to videos like they do audio, I wouldn’t have even gotten it then.)

@rain-Sorry, faulty memory circuit.
But back to the OP’s question, what all this is getting at is that if you resize your photos for display on your blog before uploading, you’ll have oodles of room for a long time to come. I noticed that the photos in your post on digital photos are straight out of the camera (3072px × 2304px) and weight in at 2.4M, which is great for printing, but totally unnecessary for web display. That will certainly eat up your storage space.
