Images are poorly resized by WP even when they don’t need to be
-
I’ve found that WP is resizing all of my images by adding ?w=###&h=### to the image. This runs through some WP.com filter that resizes the image but it’s not a bi-cubic resize and it makes the image look terrible. In particular, images that I upload and display at the uploaded size are still run through this processor, even though the resulting image is the same size.
Here’s a test case:
Take an image from a blog (e.g. example.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/image.jpg). Load the same image in the browser adding the w= and h= parameters for the size of the original image (e.g. example.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/image.jpg?w=600&h=200). Notice that it renders the same size but the image quality is terrible.
Expected behavior:
If the image size specified is the same as the original, no changes should be made.
If the image is a different size a bi-cubic resize should be applied so that it looks good; otherwise let the browser resize it which is not going to be any worse quality than what’s happening now.I’ve found a workaround is to take the width and height parameters off the image tag in the HTML view of the edit page. In addition adding the width and height to the style tag allows the browser to reserve the space for the image without causing this effect.

I’m assuming you are referring to a free blog from and being free hosted by wordpress.COM despite the fact you haven’t posted a URL. This is a peer support forum where we Volunteers ie. your fellow bloggers answer support questions. If you wish to send your feedback in to Staff here’s the link. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/Bottom line: If you are particular about your images, pre-size and resample your images with a dedicated image editing program before you upload them.
