Images are served in lots of 40?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello.
    Again.
Seems to be a bad month for me and images.
Today I noticed that when I access Media Library I am restricted to 40 images at a time.

Is this a new feature, or have I turned on / off something vital in error?
On a slow connection waiting for the next 40 to load is a serious downside to me. I don’t have the luxury of time to wait. I need to see all my images at one load.

This is definitely not a great feature for me
Please, how do I turn it off?
    Cheers

The site I need help with is aim2dchinabusinessnews.wordpress.com.

Just for the record, searches such: “as turn off wordpress image library limit” and similar don’t throw back any answers.
    thx

  • Hi there,

This is how the Media Library works on the WP-Admin interface. If you want your images to automatically load as you scroll I recommend using the Media Library at the new interface. Here’s a direct link:

    Hello, thx for your feedback.
    Tried as suggested- no effect.
    Maybe I was too brief?

For the past year, when I compose an article the last step is image placement.
At this point i am in the block editor.
Right column, near bottom is “select image” option.
    With me thus far?

    Great.
I select from media library, or words to that effect.
That shows me pretty much all my images.
If need be I can quickly scroll for the last dozen.
    Until now.

Now, I am presented with just batches of 40.

I was previously trying to edit images and followed a suggestion re that.
However that reset my POSTS page, so I reverted back.
My initial query was if I might be the root course.
Did I turn something on or off in error?

But now you say this is default behaviour, but that has not been my experiencing up until very recently.
    So now I am perplexed.
    Even confused!

That isn’t what I see when inserting an image block and choosing an image from the media library in the post editor. This is what I see: https://d.pr/i/xYrRbe

Additionally, every image in your media library shows up for me just fine.

If you’re still having this problem, please take a screenshot or two of the problem in question. If you’re not familiar on how to take a screenshot, this support document will help explain how to make one:

    Take a Screenshot

Then, use a service like Snipboard.io to upload the screenshot and then share the image link from that service here and we’ll take a closer look.

Additionally can you let us know what operating system and browser you’re using and the version numbers for each? Once we have that information, we’ll be better able to advise.

    Thanks!

helper-heroponriki thanks for your reply, I am really happy to read it!
The previous reply made me wonder if I was losing my mind.

    Can I clarify please;

That isn’t what I see when inserting an image block and choosing an image from the media library in the post editor.

You are in admin mode looking at my site or speaking from what you see in yours?
I question this as the next comment re my images loading fine suggests you are referring to mine.

Ok, again thanks, really, I was starting to doubt my eyes and memory.
It tends to confirm what I thought.
ie; This isn’t normal practice and I have errr, jiggered something up last time round the image saga.

I have not had time to open your first link, assuming it is a screen shot- slow loading and all that and as you probably guess, time is precious for me.

Like wise my screen shot, hopefully by Monday- it is my “less busy ” day – usually.
If the Internet gods are smiling – I will do it sooner, although this is not a priority issue for me. Just a major inconvenience. Everything else works fine.

However, I am using Linux, Zorin OS 15.3 to be exact, which I believe is built on Ubuntu 18. Browser is chromium : Version 91.0.4472.101- not chrome if you are a MS user. It may not be latest version although it was update a short time back I seem to recall.

Again thanks for your message, hint of a Brit / Irish vernacular in your bio??

  • Hi there,

I think I need to clarify something:

The media library will never load all your images at once. On sites with a large amount of media that would take forever, and use up massive amounts of bandwidth, even with the thumbnail versions that load in the library.

The media library uses a feature commonly known as infinite scroll – a set of images load initially, and as you scroll down new images are continually loaded in batches. On a fast internet connection this creates the illusion that all the images loaded from the start, because by the time you reach the end of the first batch, the next batch has already finished loading.

But if you have a slow connection, then it will happen that you’ll need to wait for each next batch to load.

If I’m still misunderstanding what you’re seeing, a screen shot or a short screen recording will definitely help us :)

Hello Kokkieh, just a quick courtesy thank you for your input.
I support and understand infinite scroll, and the issues arising from large image libraries.

So I do not have any problem with that.

I did write an indepth explanation off line with images – as the screen shot link does not function off line.

I was going to copy and paste here, but can not find a way to include images.

So, I will rewrite again when I am back in Beijing.

As I said, this is not terribly urgent, just massively inconvenient.

Hello, I am composing this off line, in a bus, and was going to attach screen shots as images as I can’t load that link. But….

So, anyway, here is the dry version, no pictures.
It should send once I reach an Internet connection.

I can try that later if need be.
    —————————————————————

Just to quickly follow up on your last email.
Thx for that by the way.

Yep I understand your point re practicality and ability load a million images instantly.

But, and I am not certain you clarified my question, the screen shot of MY images you sent me is not quite what I am questioning.

It would appear you have selected home > media in which case, I concur.
That is what I see, albeit smaller as I need to be able to see as many at a glance as I can.
    As per screen shot.

In the compose new post editor, right hand column – did I say left before? if so sorry- select featured image > media library again ref screen shot.

This leads to the media library image options – see next shot.
Up until a few days back, I could now scroll down thru all my images.
However, now it is limited to just 40.

So, my question: is this a new feature?
Or have I set or unset something last time?
In which case, how do I reset it to show all images as I scroll?
    Cheers

  • Hi,

In the compose new post editor, right hand column – did I say left before? if so sorry- select featured image > media library again ref screen shot.

Alright, so you are referring exclusively to selecting a Featured Image for a post?

I have accessed your account and tried it out – when I open up the Media Library to choose an image, I can see all your uploaded files, dating back to May 2020. This is the same I see when opening up your Media Library directly.

Since we’re not able to reproduce it, it might be related to your browser or the internet connection. Are you able to try a different browser and connect to another internet source?

  • Unknown's avatar

Firstly, sincere apologies for multiple, seemingly similar posts.
The latter was composed in and pasted to a text editor for later sending, but there was no Internet so I did not expect it to send.

Secondly thanks +freeatomica- you are my here. But my sensitivities compel me to point out in regard to :

Alright, so you are referring exclusively to selecting a Featured Image for a post?

I did state that, fairly clearly I thought in my initial post. Maybe I am reading too much into that comment, but its phrasing tends to suggest I did not make my point clear before.

But yes, you are quite right, that is the situation and I am happy to know you were able to see all 143 images at once.
So was I, about 2 weeks back.
Now I know I am not crazy.

Re different browser, connection etc, I am ahead of yup, I have already done that. Tried on a different machine, using different Internet connect. Sadly same browser. Issue presents in that machine also.

I understand your comment and conclusion that the issue is not in the WP system. That was my gut feeling from day one.
However, I am vague here: if I changed something in my settings, in error, would it show up for you, or not?

To clarify, end of last month I posted re trying to resize images.
One solution offered was a link which changed my admin to an advanced option.
    As follows:

    csabarakasz wrote:

    Haha. Indeed it is.

This question helped me learn something new. Go to this settings (https://wordpress.com/me/account) and turn on Dashboard Appearance:

    https://wordpress.com/support/account-settings/#dashboard-appearance

I think after that more settings will show up.

Let me know if that works for you!

It failed so I reversed it.
Now, I am asking would anything that I did there or anywhere else in trying to resize have any impact?
If so, would it show up for you or not?

I am just having trouble getting my head around the fact this “suddenly” started after my image sizing issue when I am using exactly the same devices with exactly the same browser and exactly the same connections.

Surely it can not be a coincidence?

This is – hopefully – the screen shot of what I see after I try to move from the editor page to selecting and inserting an image form the library.
If you are coming to this new, can I politely request you read the thread from the beginning before jumping in?

    Cheers

  • However, I am vague here: if I changed something in my settings, in error, would it show up for you, or not?

We actually log in as your account to check this, so if this was being caused by a setting in your account, we’d see it. That said, there is no setting that changes how images from the media library are listed when you try to insert them.

Thanks for the screen shot. What you see there is essentially a manual infinite scroll. That happens when regular infinite scroll cannot load, which is most likely due to your connection in this case.

On my end, viewing as your account, the regular infinite scroll is loading, not the manual version.

Thanks Kokkieh – that is helpful.
I can stop searching and back stepping.

In so far as I am aware, there have been no changes to my connection, and from a user perspective, no other site, page or Internet focused activity has been negatively impacted. Even my fast 5G setting delivers the screen shot.
Nothing has changed, noticeably in the year and a bit I have been using WP.
    WordPress must be hyper sensitive.

Thanks to everyone for their time.
If I ever find a solution I will post again, meantime, let’s put this to bed.
    Cheers
