Images disappeared

I was just added as an admin to a WordPress.com blog to see if I can help figure out what happened with the images. All images older than about 13 months are gone from the media library (so therefore get the broken link X icon and broken links to media). They’re using 0% of media storage NOW (but before those images were deleted, it could have been close to the limit – I have no idea what file size they had for the images). I do not know when the images disappeared (the blog is just being resurrected now).
So two questions:
1. Is there any way to restore images without having to edit each post and re-upload?
2. Any further ideas of why they would have spontaneously disappeared or should I just tell them to keep an eye on their storage levels and/or host externally?The blog is https://stjohnskasson.wordpress.com/

Have you deleted images from your Media Library? If you delete an image file from your Media Library then you are removing it from WordPress.COM servers and it cannot be displayed when a browser calls for it. In order to have the images display in posts and pages you have to upload them again.
Have you hot-linked to images hosted on an other site and have they disappeared?

timethief – I saw this same post on several other threads, so I thought I had addressed those questions – no, they’re not in the media library, I guess I didn’t explicitly state but we have no reason to believe one of the contributors would have deleted them (though I can’t 100% swear to it…I’d say 97% swear to it). No, they’re not hosted externally.
The Google cache doesn’t help. I’m not even sure when it last cached.
Please see my original two questions – any way to restore (date problem started is unknown, which I know greatly reduces that chance) and any known reason why photos would spontaneously disappear from our blog (hosted through our blog, no longer in media library and assumed that they were not intentionally deleted).

Contributors cannot upload images or delete them.
Contributor – has no publishing or uploading capability, but can write and edit their own posts until they are published. https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#contributor
I tagged this thread for Staff assistance previously as they have logs and can see our activity and know exactly who logged in and did what, and when they did it. Assuming you did not share your login information with anyone else and you are the only Admin and there are no Editors and Authors who can upload and delete images Staff will be able to home in on what happened.

I will not be the one listed as doing anything – as I explained initially, I was only added as an admin today to help them track this down. There are technically two other admins, but only one who actually logs in and does anything, and several authors. I stated I’m 97% sure no one deleted them en masse because it wouldn’t have been me, but I can’t imagine why any of the other users would touch it.
Thank you for tagging it for staff. I’m not optimistic there is any recourse to fix it at this point, but I would like to know WHY this happened so it doesn’t happen to them again.

It looks like several images were deleted by a member of the site several months ago. I’m afraid there isn’t a way to restore these images. The best option would be to re-upload them and replace the images within your blog posts. I’m sorry!

Thanks. Wish I knew what happened, but too late now. The “real” admin is working to restore it. I appreciate the response.
