Images Failed To Import

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi –

I have exported my wordpress.com site and have imported it on a self hosted temporary domain. The posts have come through but almost none of my photos have been brought over from the media library. Some posts have a blank space where the photo once was and others look as if a photo was never there.

I have read multiple posts outlining issues – but none definitive enough for me to know how to ensure that I don’t have errors or have to manually upload all the images again.

Is there anything noticeable about DomOnTheGo.com and the way the images are posted that would help outline why they fail to import?

    Thanks

Were the missing images actually uploaded into in your wordpress.com blog’s media library?

If they were images that you linked to by URL then they were not on wordpress.com servers, they were on another sites servers, so they will not be in the XML export file.

Also note that “featured images” are a feature of some themes and themes cannot be exported and imported so they will not appear as featured images on the new site.

Thanks for your message. While there are a couple that are linked to another URL, most of the pictures exist in the media library.

Regarding Featured Images – Understood. I have upgraded the theme for the self hosted version and know that these will need to be updated manually. Luckily for me there are less than 15 posts at this stage.

Sorry about the missing “u” above.

  • Hi there,

Your site is set to public, so media files should be pulled over to the new site after the text content finishes importing. But media files can sometimes take a bit longer.

However, if you search the WordPress.org forums you’ll see many posts from people who’ve experienced this problem, both when migrating content between .org site, as well as from .com to .org. So this is a known issue with the .org importer.

I do see a large number of images in your library aren’t attached to any posts. This can happen if you bulk-upload images directly to the library instead of via the Add Media button in the post editor. Please try attaching those images to the respective posts, then create a new export file and import it to the new site.

You can view and attach those images here:

    https://domonthego.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php?mode=list&attachment-filter=detached&m=0&filter_action=Filter&s&action=-1&paged=1&action2=-1&affected&_ajax_nonce=66fb51afcc&ps

If that does not do the trick, you’ll need to search or ask in the .org forums if anyone has found a solution for this issue.

Thanks Kokkieh. Many of my image galleries on my posts had there settings to not link to an attachment or a media page. I have attempted to “attach” them as you have outlined but they still show as unattached in the wordpress dashboard. Over time I noticed that there were fewer that were unattached – not sure why. I assume one attached they no longer show up when refreshing the unattached filter.

I have made my temporary domain accessible if that helps you any further.

    Cheers

  • I assume one attached they no longer show up when refreshing the unattached filter.

That exactly. After you attach some images, refresh the page, or it will feel like you’re not making any progress.

I have made my temporary domain accessible if that helps you any further.

The site you’re importing to doesn’t need to be accessible, only the one you’re exporting from. But as I mentioned, the problem could also be with the importer itself on your self-hosted site.

Thanks. The importer being used is still WordPress.

I ended up deleting the new site, doing a fresh import, and manually added the photos that ended up not migrating. Appreciate your help.

  • Thanks for letting me know, and sorry it was such a process. Normally importing goes much more smoothly :)
