Images Fuzzy Off A Mac – Am I Doing Something Wrong?

    Ever since WordPress changed up their image loader, the pics on my blog have appeared fuzzy. I mess with them before I post them to make them radiate color and to ensure they’re crisp and detailed, but when I upload them onto my blog they look like crap. Is this because they’re TOO detailed and have too many MBs, or is this a WordPress image problem? I might have to start uploading to Flickr and then cuting and pasting. Need some advice. Thanks.

    Since WordPress “resizes” images rather than resampling them, it can lead to fuzzy images if they are really large (over 1000px wide).

    My suggestion is to optimize the images before you upload them and size them to about 1000px in the longest dimension.

  • tsp: WordPress.com does resample images. That’s not the problem here, nor are 1000px images an issue.

    vanceastro: it looks to me like you’ve inserted a Medium image into your post, then dragged to make it larger. The result is a fuzzy image because you’re “upsizing” a 300 pixel wide image.

    Use a Full Size image if you want to do that and it’ll look fine:

    How do I add a large sized image to my post?

    If that’s not what happened, please post more details about how you inserted that image into your post so we can track down the source of the problem.

    @tellyworth, WordPress may resample, but there is a noticeable difference in quality when it is presized and resampled with an image editing program.

    Thank you. It might just be easier downloading to Flickr.

    @tellyworth

    After a comment by Matt on a post I made, I discovered that WordPress only “resamples” when you select thumbnail or medium image sizes. If you select full size when inserting an image, WordPress just proportionally scales the image down to a size appropriate for the width of the post/page area in the theme being used, and then relies on the browser to render the downsized image.

    If one cares about image quality, this makes it all the more important that you use an image editing program to adjust image to an appropriate size prior to uploading them.
