Images Have Disappeared from Blog and Media Library

A large number of images have disappeared from my blogs and these images have also disappeared from my media library.
I have not deleted them from my media library and I have only used up 12% of my allowable space.
I am heartbroken as I have spect hours crafting these blogs.
A friend has checked my blog on his own computer – using different browsers as well – and the images are definitely missing.
Does anyone from WordPress care? Nothing would induce me to upgrade to the paid version after this experience.

I’ve never heard of media library images just spontaneously vanishing. I wonder if you might have inadvertently lost images by copying and pasting the content of a post or page to another post or page, and then deleting the original with its attached images. This has happened to me.

Someone else reported the same error a few threads down.
Nobody from staff will know or care unless someone puts “bugs” and “Modlook” in the sidebar Tags area, which I will do now.

And try to keep the tags relevant. There is no support here for heartbreak, just technical issues. And this isn’t related to upgrades.

Thanks for your very helpful tips – I will try and do the same with the sidebar Tags.
Perhaps WP has changed the version recently which is why I am having these problems. I have tried to find out which version I do have but the suggestions as to where I can find out do not appear on my WP page.

Hi there! I just scrolled through your site and I’m not seeing any broken images. Can you link me to a specific post that has a broken image so I can take a look?
I do see many image deletions in your site’s log going back 5 months. Please note that if you delete an image here:

It is also deleted from your posts. To confirm whether these deletions are related to the missing images, I need to find a reference to an image on your site that isn’t working currently.

Hi, I’m having the same problem here. The photos that I have in my blog entries are still in my media library, but when I view the article, I can only see broken images. In some of my blog entries, I can view like a few of the photos I have placed in it, although I have deleted those in my media library. I hope you can look into this. Thank you.

Thanks for getting back to me.
This link is an example of a post with missing images:
I have started trying to replace some of the missing photos from this post (including images 1 and 2) but image 3 is missing as are some of the others. You will see the photo title which is all that remains below an empty square where the photo used to be. I have not deleted any of these photos from my media library. I have only used up about 18% of my entitled space.
Many of my older posts also have images missing. I have been trying to replace these photos because it looks so bad if people go to my posts and find the photos are not there.
The only images I have deleted in the last 5 months have been where I have been replacing images which disappeared and have decided to use a different replacement.
Has WordPress changed the version, or done something similar, which might explain why so many of my images have disappeared from my post? I have not removed these photos from my media library.
Another image which has disappeared is the image which is the “header” which used to be at the top of each post and my blog and that disappeared over a year ago.
I have been trying to replace the missing photos but it is a painstaking process.

It looks like you embedded images via URL from Facebook. This is the URL I see for the first broken image:
Those images seem to have been deleted since you embedded them. This means, the images were never uploaded to your WordPress.com site.
Unfortunately, there’s nothing here for me to restore since these photos were hosted elsewhere.
Is this the image you wanted to use for your Header?
It looks like you maybe changed the image in your Media Library, but did not update your Header settings since the old url is similar, but without the ‘-2’:
You should be able to fix this up in the Header pane of your Customizer.

Shawna, Thank you very much for your help. I did not realise that if I posted an image using a URL the photo did not go into my media library.
However I’m still mystified why the images disappeared from my blogs. The URL images came from my Facebook page and none of the photographs have been deleted from my Facebook page. Therefore I do not understand why they have disappeared from my blog.
Either Facebook or WordPress have changed some of their settings. It will take me weeks to upload the images again.
With regard to the image for the header: I never changed the header image or deleted it so I am completely mystified as to why it disappeared from my blog. But thank you very much for giving me a link to the location of the original header image.
Is it possible that WordPress changed some settings which resulted in some of my images disappearing from my blogs?

The URL images came from my Facebook page and none of the photographs have been deleted from my Facebook page. Therefore I do not understand why they have disappeared from my blog.
It’s hard to say for sure, but the most likely explanation is the URL of the image changed on Facebook which broke the image link to your site.

Thanks very much. I agree that does seem a plausible explanation and I do believe Facebook, since it went public, has been altering some of its parameters, especially in a bid to make more money.
At least I now know never to use the URL to post images in my blogs.
