images imported, but do not display

  • Unknown's avatar

I imported a blog from self hosting at bluehost (account now expired, sort of last minute, ha!)

images are not showing up on the post for example: https://benandbethwest.wordpress.com/2013/02/26/our-home/

But the images are all in the media bowser, and the images are links to the correct URL (https://benandbethwest.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/2012-09-15_1347743123.jpg)

But the image references are to the wrong place (old hosting, and scaled version):
    http://www.benandbethwest.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/2012-09-15_1347743123-300×300.jpg

Is there an easy way to fix this in bulk, or am I going to just have to edit each post?

    Thanks

I’ve tagged this for Staff attention. Hopefully they’ll be able to help change the image references for you.

  • Hi there,

We do have a way to manually fix this, but it requires the source site to still be online. If you’re certain all the images made it across to your media library I can ask a developer to take a look, though. But I can’t make any promises.

I’ll let you know what they say. It might be a few days before I get back to you, so please don’t make changes to your existing content in the meantime. It would be fine to create new content, though.

    Thanks kokkieh,

Unfortunately the old site does not exist any more. The hosting account expired a day or two after the change. (I should have left myself more time, my fault). I wont make any changes. It appears all the images are there. When I scroll though the library everything I expect to see it there.

If it is helpful I do have a backup of the content with the original file structure in place.

    Thanks, I appreciate the help!

  • We’ve fixed up which posts we could, but there are still a number of images that don’t appear to be in your library.

Does your backup include the Uploads directory of your site, so a backup of all the actual image files? What is the total size of the backup?

kokkieh thanks for all your help on this.

I did some spot checking, for example on this post: https://benandbethwest.wordpress.com/2013/03/24/celebrating-a-decade/

Several of the pictures that are not showing up are in the library: (https://benandbethwest.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/1-2013-03-14-10-03-04.jpg, https://benandbethwest.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/1-2013-03-19-19-43-44.jpg)

    but some are not: https://benandbethwest.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/1-2013-03-19-19.27.38.jpg

I checked my backup and the missing image (1-2013-03-19-19.27.38.jpg) is in it. The back up appears to have the alternative sizes for the images in it as well (1-2013-03-19-19.27.38-300×300.jpg).

The backup does have the file structure in place and the image files are there. The uploads folder is 229.7 MB.

I am glad to put the backup in dropbox for you to access if it is helpful.

Also, for future reference, aside from checking that this all worked and resolving the issues before the self hosted site was deactivated is there something I did wrong in the import that would have prevented this?

  • If the file is already in your dropbox it might be simpler if you just share the link with us so we can download it from there? I’ll send you an email in that case so you don’t need to share the link publicly.

Regarding the images that are in the library – the permalinks for those images differ from the URL that was in your import:

    <a href="http://benandbethwest.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/1-2013-03-14-10-03-04.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1988" src="http://www.benandbethwest.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/1-2013-03-14-10.03.04-300x300.jpg" alt="1-2013-03-14 10.03.04" width="300" height="300" /></a>

We basically run a search-and-replace to update the links in a case like this, but that doesn’t work unless it’s an exact match, and the -300×300 in the the wp-content URL means that it’s not. That could very well be why the importer failed to pull them in to start with.

Also, for future reference, aside from checking that this all worked and resolving the issues before the self hosted site was deactivated is there something I did wrong in the import that would have prevented this?

Not really, no. It would have helped to have the self-hosted site online for a while after the import, but this happens sometimes. In this case, likely the permalink mismatch for the image URLs was the problem. Without seeing the self-hosted site and having access to its dashboard there’s no way to tell where that extra text in the URL comes from.

    kokkieh,

Here is the link:[redacted by staff]

  • Thanks for the link. I’ve given it to the developer working on this. He has a few high-priority tasks this week so might not get to it right away. Please be patient until you hear from me again :)

    kokkieh,

thanks, I appreciate it. I am not in a huge rush. I am hoping to start using this blog agin once this is sorted, but obviously it has been a while!

  • I’ll keep you posted :)

    kikkieh,

Just wanted to check in on this. Ill keep waiting if it is still in process, but if it is not going to work out I want to go ahead and start relinking the pictures manually.

    Thanks!
    Ben

  • It is still on the to-do list, but the developer who does these fixes has been working on migrating our entire email support system to a different platform the past two weeks, so his hands have been a bit full. But he has promised me he’ll get to it as soon as he can.

If you do want to go ahead and fix it yourself you are, of course, welcome, but we’re happy to help if you’re willing to wait :)

Sorry it’s been so long. The timing has just been bad in this case.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks, and no worries on the timing, I just wanted to check in. I will wait for now, I don’t have a pressing need as of yet.

    Thanks for the update

    HI Kokkieh,

Just wanted to check on on this again. I amy be relaunching this blog in the next few weeks with a custom domain, not sure if that will cause problems with any fixes, so I want to make sure we work thought what we need to before then.

    Thanks
    Ben

  • Hello Ben,

I’m really sorry this is taking so long. I’m following up with the developer who was looking at this.

Adding a custom domain to your WordPress.com site shouldn’t be a problem, though. Even with a custom domain, media files on a WordPress.com site are stored and referenced at the free URL, so if we’re able to fix this a custom domain won’t matter.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Sounds good, thanks!

  • Right, your site should be all fixed up now. We were just unable to fix two posts as they reference .zip files and video files which cannot be uploaded to your media library on the free plan. The .zip files also aren’t in the Uploads directory of your old site.

    These posts are:

Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

  • Unknown's avatar

Awesome, thanks! No worries on those two posts, ill just take those references out.

  • Thank you for your patience with this :)
