images in excerpts or w/ more tag

Howdy. Is there a way to include an image in an excerpt?
Or is there another way to get an image into the summaries or excerpts shown on the home page? At the moment, I’m using the more tag, but doesn’t give the reader any images because my pictures tend to come pretty far down the post, and I don’t want to include that much text before the “more” line.
I don’t want to use Featured Images because that seems also to insert the images into my post’s text itself–and not necessarily where I want it. (Am I right that that’s unavoidable with Featured Images?)

Yes, images can be included in excerpts. Some themes support the excerpt function, others do not. If you are using a theme which supports excerpts, then copy the html you want to appear in the excerpt into the excerpt module of your post. Some themes only display your excerpts in archive or category pages. A few display excerpts on the main home blogging page.
Excerpts are not the same as using the “more” tag.
Not all themes support excerpts.

Thanks, 1tess. So in some themes, the excerpts function shows up but doesn’t actually work? I’ve got Vigilance, and so far as I can tell, I can’t use excerpts, despite the fact that it looks like an option in my post menu.
I’ve got the CSS upgrade. Is there some way I can change the featured image function so that the image only appears in the “feature”–in the text excerpt created by the more tag? Or is there a way to enable excerpts with CSS?

CSS is a styling document used by the browser to position and style all the elements of a web page. It can’t be used to change or add functionality.
