images lost after migration from another hosting to wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

I migrated my blog from another hosting to wordpress.com and the image links in the posts are still pointing to the old hosting (the images themselves have migrated without problems though). Unfortunately, the old hosting has run out and I no longer have access to it. Also, on wordlress.com I cannot use any plugins or access to cPanel and things like this…

Is there anything I can do besides manually changing each link?

    Thank you!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello there,

Happy to help you with this.

It’s not uncommon for this to happen when migrating a site from one place to another.

Can you tell me if the other site was under a different domain please?

Also, can you point me toward the an article where the images aren’t showing so that we can take a look please.

    Many thanks.

Hi, thank you so much for replying. The old site was under a different domain (www.chasingswallows.com) and the hosting company was Bluehost . I decided that I don’t want to run a blog anymore and more it to a free account just for my family memories, which are very important to me.

Here is a link to one of the articles. Some images got transfered and some didn’t.

I’d like to point out that the actual images in the media are there, it’s the links to the images that didn’t change (some did, some didn’t). I googled the ways to fix it, but most of them involve using plugins. I cannot use them since it’s a free account. Thank you so much again for your assistance!

  • Hey @jeniarash88, I can’t tell why this happened yet, but I’ve got an idea for troubleshooting.

First, though, is the site you’re importing from still online? The importer gets images from the old site, plus it would be really helpful to compare posts for troubleshooting. If possible, can you leave that site online until this is sorted? The domain doesn’t seem to be working anymore.

I’m looking at this post (I just picked one randomly)
    https://chasingswallowsblog.wordpress.com/2020/06/25/7-traditional-peruvian-drinks/

I’m noticing there’s a mix of image sources. Some that are here and doing fine, some that point here but are not fine, and some that still point to the old host. Not ideal. If you edit the post (or even just view it and view source — my original plan, but I couldn’t load anything) can you see that the image URLs you used in the post are all similar? Do some say http, and others https for example? Or www and not? I want to say the importer will grab images only from the url listed at the top of the export file. So if they don’t match, you’ll want to address that — backups, find and replace plugin, export, and then test import into a separate free site. If that works, best bet is to clear the posts and re-import.

If the image urls ARE all the same in the post, chances are your host just blocked our requests to download images at some point. They might have seen too many image requests and figured we were up to no good, and then just stopped. If that happened, and if the site is still online, we have tools on our side to help address that.

Sorry that’s a lot, but it sounds like you’ve got a good handle on this. Let us know what you find, or when the old site, if possible, is back online.

  • Ooo, and as another development, I noticed

404s. Implying not all of the media files made it at all.

A re-import might be in order.
