Images no longer allow click to enlarge

  • Unknown's avatar

On past posts, I was able to easily (or automatically) insert an image at one size, but one can click on it to open full-size image. That appears impossible to do, unless some setting have changed. How does one set that up to work like it once did?

Maybe I just don’t get the ‘usability’ features you now have, or it’s just become hard to navigate and awkward!

    Thanks.

Hi there, in which Editor are you adding your images, in the Calypso Editor (blue) or the WP Admin Editor?

This time it has been the blue / Calypso editor, since it keeps text and images much better than the black / WP Admin editor.

Hello again, After you insert the image via the Add Media button and your image is still highlighted (if it isn’t click on it), click the Link button in the Visual Editor toolbar. Your image link will appear in the URL box and you can select whether to open that in a new window or not.

Easier still is using the Gallery feature if you are inserting multiple images and haven’t discovered it yet. See here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/gallery/

Let me know if you need more help with that.

Thanks, I would have never guessed that would be the control – not obvious to me! It works for now, so I’ll do that.

What would really help is the option to open an image in a separate window one can X out of, then the reader can continue on the original blog post.

I do use galleries sometimes, but only when I have many photos from one topic, then another gallery with other photos from another topic.

Otherwise, galleries are not my thing – I do not like that WordPress doesn’t allow the author to turn off comments on gallery photos, but keep them on for the overall blog. Some people bury their comments there, and that defeats the interactive purpose of a blog.

I prefer comments where everyone will see them, in the comments part with everyone else at the bottom of each post! Like this –

You can do that by making a Gallery with a single image, but it isn’t very straightforward when you create a Gallery in the Calypso Editor. You have to select 2 images so that the Gallery function kicks in and then delete the one you don’t want by editing the Gallery before inserting it in your Post.

The easiest way to do this, if you upload a lot of images to Galleries, is by turning off commenting site-wide first and then uploading your images. You can then turn on comments for each Post before publishing. The caveat here is that this only works for newly uploaded images. For images already uploaded, you’ll need to edit each one in the WP Admin Media Library to turn off comments.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for the work-arounds, those are all ideas I’ll try another time. Spent too many hours on my blog today!
