Images not being used by Twitter

  • Unknown's avatar

Has anyone cracked the use of images with Twitter? I have read most of the comments/threads on these forums and most point back to Publicize. However I cannot get images to be used.

My Publicize settings work great – the posts are pushed to Facebook (OK with image), Tumblr and to Twitter with my custom message, however Twitter never gets the image.

I have set my “featured image” for each post and tried to ensure that it wasn’t too big.

I have reviewed twitter.com for any tips and have even tried to use exactly 200×200 images and I have been careful to use the right format of image.

I have reviewed every setting I can find, searched through WP support and forums for an answer – all to no avail so far!

Has anyone got this working and if so, how?

Thanks for the follow-up. I’ve checked all my Twitter settings again – I can tweet photos quite easily through Twitter and the Twitterific mobile app.

They are just not being picked up when I use Publicize, which is odd.

    I’ll keep searching.

I use Bufferapp for exactly this reason. it works fine, just few little extra steps. WordPress’s Publicize does not carry images.

    Hi @swells65,

Try getting your custom domain whitelisted for Twitter Cards using this tool:

    https://cards-dev.twitter.com/validator

If you run the following URL through the validator you should have to option to request approval for your site.

    Ferguson 4 Wheel Drive System

After that, your twitter images should start to work.

    Hi lizthefair,
Thank you for the advice, this is a big step forward! I have validated a card and it works well. I need to do some reading up on the twitter site to get it just as I want it.

My last post tweeted OK however the card doesn’t show up automatically, I needed to click on View Summary to see the image and it didn’t show up on the mobile device, so there must be some settings I need to adjust to make it work as I want it!

    Thanks again :-)

OK, I’ve read the twitter documentation and it clearly states that the image will not show in the timeline – which is the only thing I want to happen!

I’ll use the twitter cards until I can find a way of getting the image into the timeline. I think the card is actually a waste of time because very few people will click on View Summary as they are more likely to click on the wp link instead, however it is the image that attracts them to click on that link!

As I said in my earlier post, you don’t get the option of viewing the summary on a mobile device which is where the majority of users will see my tweets.

That is unfortunate. Did you submit a support request to Twitter as well? They may have more leverage to make this work the way you want it to.

I’m glad the twitter card is working for you, even it if it’s not exactly the solution you were looking for.

I will keep digging around twitter – several of the companies I follow seem to have cracked it and others (including very big ones) haven’t.

The image does not show on Twitter because WordPress’s Publicize is not making a post with an image in it. It is a text post in essence which is utilizing the Twitter API to pull the image with it.

The only way images will show up in the Twitter timeline, is if you insert it manually, or you use service like Bufferapp (I have nothing to do with Bufferapp but I just find their service relatively easier and appealing, compared to various others).

You can experiment this, and you will see the difference when you make a blog post to go out to Facebook and Twitter at the same time.

The image does not show on Twitter because WordPress’s Publicize is not making a post with an image in it.

Is there a way to change this? Perhaps a feature request? It would be great for the publicize to Twitter feature to include the text specified in the publicize custom message AND the first image or the featured image.

Is there a way to change this? Perhaps a feature request?

I’ll look into it on our end, but my understanding is this is a change that needs to be made on Twitter’s end.

Thanks. In the meantime I will work with Twitter Cards – which is not the perfect solution, but a step in the right direction.
