Images on free theme always black and white

  The images I choose for my free theme (twenty twenty-two) blog are always inserted black and white, although they are colour images.
  Is this a characteristic of this theme, with fewer options for customisation?
  I am not a non-designer, but WordPress has changed a lot since I set up my earlier blogs.
