Images: Use and Copyrighting
-
I know word press prefers when you credit an image. Often I try to do this but find that the only reference there is just another web site which may have found the image off the internet just like I did. I read a little about it on the word press web site and I know about gettyimages but even there, it looks like many of the images aren’t available for embedding. Also, the image I used wouldn’t show up in my reader. Please advise.
I am also wondering, when you put a link in a blog, how do you get it to read as something other than the html text? For example, if I add a live link such as: http://www.philsblog.com
how can I get it to just read Phil’s Blog in the text (but still be a live link of course, thanks. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This is not a matter of preference. This is a matter of copyright law and Terms of Service. http://en.wordpress.com/tos/ You cannot use any image on your blog that you do not have the express written permission of the copyright holder to use without breaching copyright law.

This is the guide for creating links in posts and pages: http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/
This is the general link model:
<a href="URL HERE">Highlighted anchor text here</a>
This is the visual result – it’s not actually linked here in the forum.
Highlighted anchor text here1. Enter the relevant descriptive anchor text you want to link to first. Note that “here” is not a good choice.
2. Then use your mouse to highlight that anchor text. (If you don’t highlight the anchor text the chain icon will remain grayed out and not be useable.)
3. Next click the chain icon in the editor and proceed to create the link.More here > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/05/20/creating-html-hyperlinks-links-in-wordpress/

Thank you. As usual, your answers are very helpful. So other than supplying our our images, would getty images be the only options as far as images that are usable in the blogs?

Oh no! That’s not the only source of free images that we can use. You can install zemanta on your browser http://www.zemanta.com/download/

Also, would you know how I can get the Getty images to show up in the reader?
I’m sorry but I believe the Reader selects featured images and they have to be images that are uploaded into your Media Library. As I could be wrong about that since the changes were made, I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

For the record, while we certainly recommend that you use only material for which you hold the copyright (your own content) or material licensed for use elsewhere as timethief has linked, we do not require our users to credit the source of any content on their blogs. There are tons of sources of free images and other content out there, licensed as ‘copyright free,’ or licensed under Creative Commons, and then as you say there is also now Getty Images.
However, if the copyright holder files a DMCA notice, we are required by law to remove or disable any disputed content unless and until the user who posted it files a counter-notice challenging the original complaint.
The best thing to do is to not use other people’s content on your blog without their permission. In addition to abiding by copyright law, it’s just the right thing to do.
