Images vs Galleries – making an image clickable for full screen display
-
I’m just getting re-started with WP after many years absence. I’ve built a simple site and placed a few images in posts, and also galleries. I love the way a gallery presents a ‘thumbnail’ type display of each image, which can be clicked for a (near) full-screen presentation, with left/right navigation through the gallery. But if I place an image, rather than a gallery, the image is placed in the main page at a moderate size, but there’s no option to view that single image at a larger size, the way gallery images are. Is there a way that a single image can be presented with a hyperlink to a ‘full screen’ version, the way gallery images are? Logically, I guess, I’m asking if I can build a gallery of 1?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Update – I experimented, and saw that I can edit the image in the post, and there is a ‘link’ option, and then I see ‘link to image file’. This behaves ‘somewhat’ like what I want, but the image display page is only slightly larger than the image on the original page. I’m really hoping for the link to take me to a near-full screen display, like the gallery does.

Update #2 – I experimented further, and this time, I first copied the url for image in the gallery, then went to the image in the post, again chose ‘link’ option, but this time, pasted in the link just copied rather than choosing ‘link to image file’. This time, I get a near-full screen version of the image – very close to what I wanted! Is there a way to do this more efficiently? (without having to go to gallery, copy url, then paste into the image properties in the post)? My experimental post is the one titled ‘house finches …’.

Update #3 – I found that I could add a single ‘image’, and then, after adding, use the ‘convert’ option to convert this single image to a gallery object. So this essentially gave me a ‘gallery of 1’, and did behave the way I wanted it to – the image on the main post became a clickable link, and clicking it too me to (near) full screen.
So – is this the best way to achieve what I want? It’s not totally intuitive, but – it seems to work. Comments appreciated!

It sounds like you’ve found a working solution! Bravo.
The image Lightbox (Expand on Click) and the Gallery feature do not play nicely together. If you have the Gallery Image Carousel enabled in your Settings>Media, you won’t be able to use the single image Lightbox as well.
Here’s an earlier forum reply about this https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/the-expand-on-click/#post-4039530

I’ve just (accidentally!) created a page where one image does not offer ‘expand on click’, but all other images do! The one that does NOT offer it, does offer ‘link to image file’!
I’d never seen ‘expand on click’ until this happened. I can’t ‘fix’ the image that doesn’t offer it, but I can probably duplicate an existing image that has it, then change the referenced image.
