Images will not upload correct orientation

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to upload photos from my mac running 10.5.6. I when they are uploaded they revert to the orientation I took them in. When viewed in iPhoto and preview they have proper orientation. I even manually changed the orientation on several and then exported them to a file folder and they revert once uploaded. What can I do?

IPhoto does not actually rotate the images, it keeps a file for each image that tells it what your last settings were. What you have to do is “export” the images from iPhoto (file menu) to the desktop and then upload the exported image, which has all the changes including rotation.

Hmmm, I just noticed that you said you had exported them. iPhoto I’ve never warmed up to. There are too many funky things about it. There are too many things that seem not to work as expected.

You can always open the images in Preview, rotate them and then save them.

For it to work I have export not the original from iPhoto but the “current” image I am looking at. That image loads in proper orientation but is not the raw image which is good for printing out. But it is working. I will do that for my cricket team’s site, thetscc.wordpress.com. For the family site I will just upload originals as my mom in America wants to print photos of the baby.
By the way, I tried opening the photos in preview and changing orientation and then saving but it did not work. I tried it with and with out the exif orientation tag and neither worked.
    Thanks for your help.

iPhoto is simply a pain in the rear, and I gave up on it quite sometime ago. I’m fortunate to have Photoshop.

i am also having the same issue, but the image isn’t coming from iPhoto. it is from my phone, and preview shows it just fine, as does the icon. i even re-saved it with a rotation, (again using Preview), and it still won’t maintain its orientation.

    very strange…..

photoshop fixed it. simply re-saved it. no changes necessary.

  • The problem is the same, and iPhoto isn’t the only cause. Basically, some image viewers don’t actually rotate the images, they just record a flag somewhere that says “show this photo rotated 90 degrees”. It looks correct when you view it with that application. But it won’t when you view it with other things like a web browser.

So is the only way to fix this program to use a different image viewer? I have Photoshop Elements and can even see in their properties where it says to rotate the photo but can’t figure out how to actually save the photo rotated. Do I need a different program?

Elements is an image editing program, not just an image viewer, so it should be fine to “save for web” and then pictures are truly rotated.

thanks. I played around with it and *finally* figured it out.
