IMG link to varying remote file displays old image
-
On my blog, which is hosted on WordPress.Com, I have a URL <img> link to an image on another server.
The image file on the remote server is updated every so often and the link on the WordPress.Com page showed the latest version – it had worked successfully for over a year, until recently.
The link now displays an old version of the image file – I suppose it’s cached on WordPress.Com somewhere. Note that this is an issue with WordPress.Com, not browser caching.
Has there been any changes to caching recently? Is there any way to clear that cache and continue to display the latest image?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It may be possible that your browser is pulling in a cached version of the image from its own cache or your IP’s cache.
You can test this by logging out of WPcom, clearing your browser cache and cookies (which will log you out of all sites you are logged in on) and then shutting down your browser. If you’d rather not do that, you can try viewing your site in a different browser to the one you are normally using on WPcom.

No, it’s definitely an issue on WordPress.Com itself. I’m seeing exactly the same image on other machines, some on different broadband networks, and on several browsers – IE, Firefox and Chrome – on Windows, Linux and ChromeOS. So, definitely a WordPress.Com issue.
It looks like something changed early this year. There has been a recent WordPress upgrade – maybe something to do with that?

WordPress.com is updated numerous times daily.
It would help if you would give us the link to the image which should be showing and the post/page where that image is supposed to show up?
And looking at your site, you might want to review WPcom’s advertising policy to make sure your site is keeping within the ToS you agreed to when you signed up: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/

The original page has since been modified to offer users a different means of viewing the image.
However, I have created a test page where the problem may be seen – image update test
This particular image is updated on the remote server once every minute. For the past year or so, until recently, this has worked on WordPress
If you click on the image, it will link to the version on that remote server.
Please explain the ToS policy transgression.

Here’s the code in that page and what I believe may be causing the problem-look at the IMG SRC:
<a href="http://stlukesra.besaba.com/wordpress/wp-content/webcam/webcam.jpg" target="_blank"><img id="aviennecam" class="aligncenter" src="https://i0.wp.com/stlukesra.besaba.com/wordpress/wp-content/webcam/webcam.jpg" alt="SLRAcam temorarily unavailable - please wait a few minutes, then refresh. If the situation persists, please e-mail redacted" usemap="#wmap" width="640" height="480" /></a>Can you say exactly what steps you took to insert that image?
As far as a possible transgression, WordPress.com members cannot initiate their own advertising.

The original, on the page, is:
src=”http://stlukesra.besaba.com/wordpress/wp-content/webcam/webcam.jpg”I have just found, in another forum query, ClickySteve (Staff) has said:
Images from third party sites are cached using the Photon service for improved load times, but images stored on your WordPress.com site are not.Why it’s kicked-in after so long, I don’t know, but it looks like I’m stuck with it!
-
Oh.My. Thanks for pointing that out. It does appear that, at least for now, we are indeed “stuck” with Photon.
Since you already have a link to the webcam in your Menu bar, I think you could link to the remote image directly in a Custom Menu, rather than have the page appear on your site. Just looking for a workaround.
(I do feel your pain. On one of my old WPcom sites, I had an image link in a widget that I updated weekly for years directly on an external image hosting service rather than updating it here, which would have necessitated updating the image widget with a new URL every week.)

Thanks for your replies, suggestions and interest. Case closed.
Yes, I have already created a custom menu item.
Longer term, I may have to move to a non-free service. -
Ahh – glad I found this, because I was having the same problem (with webcams and external countdown events). Bu**er.
I have invented a new word in the English language. The verb to be “WordPressed”, as in the phrase “I have just been WordPressed”.
I think most of us know what it means…..
