Impact on older posts when changing themes
-
Is there a way to change themes ONLY for future posts so that older posts are not impacted?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
No. There can only be a single theme on any blog and IMHO you are worrying needlessly. Do note that you can quickly and easily change themes to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do some work is if your are changing to a dramatically different theme and have to resize images.
Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes and browse themes until you find one you like and click “activate” or type in the name of the theme you want to use and
click the “activate” link when it appears. After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.

Bummer :-( I will try it out but think it’s a pretty significant change I’d like to make so may be stuck where I am. Appreciate the response.

I have been here for over 7 years and I have used so many of the themes switching back and forth multiple times every day when I answer support questions that I confess, I do not comprehend where you concern is coming from. Do know that you can always switch back.

I am a novice at the theme designing and want to learn how to pick a theme that is compatible and user-friendly for most devices or screens. Is there a way to get an idea which themes are supported across the various systems / devices / screens? My husband’s desktop screen shows my pages/posts quite differently than my pc screen does…mobile users on androids tell me they have viewing issues, too. I do not own a kindle or tablet or smartphone, and haven’t a clue of how to work the layout so it can be accessed without issue. I use Black Letterhead and the emailed posts are very hard to view, as I also learned. Thanks for any help you have.

Black-LetterHead, is now a retired theme.

Yes, for responsive width themes click this link http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/responsive-width/
Responsive width means the layout adapts depending on the size of the device being used to view your site. When responsive width themes are viewed on mobiles sidebars appear below the posts in order to provide as much space as possible for reading.
After activating one go here > Appearance > Mobile and disable the mobile theme.

Hi Timethief – good to see you back. No one ever answered my last question. Could you give it a look please? https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/blog-not-showing-in-reader-1?replies=2

Have you read the other threads on the subject? There are surely a couple of hundred by now.
-
Are you saying the reader is just broken and everyone is asking the same question? I looked at all of the questions and saw no answers. Do you know something I don’t Raincoaster?
-
You know how a couple of years ago WordPress gave us the option to post pics only, or post articles , or quotes, or videos (check this out http://wordpress.com/#!/post/)?
Now, some themes do not display or feature photos that were uploaded in the “Text” or “Quote”: options. They will only feature your pics when they are posted in “Photo” option.
-
That is not true. Post formats feature various types of posts, but it does NOT mean that one cannot post pictures in formats other than “image” format.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/post-formats/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-formats/In some themes, these post formats are subtle, and in others they are very much “in your face” so you cannot miss them.
But in all cases (themes) one can post pictures.
-
Well it’s not the case for me. I have been a member since 2006 and I really try every single new free theme whenever they come out and I notice that not all of them will feature a pic.
-
Featured images are not the same as posted images. You are correct: not all themes allow for featured images, certainly not the older (possibly retired) themes. But one can post images in themes with various post formats in any of the formats: Aside, Audio, Chat, Gallery, Link, Quote, Status, Video
Information about featured images:

Note that featured images display differently depending on the theme being used. -
As timethief said, changing themes does not mean you will lose any data from your current site/theme. But if you want to use a more modern theme, with a responsive format, then some of your posts may (or I believe in your case, will not) look odd.
I’d suggest you make a new private blog on your account to experiment with. Export your current site to the test blog, then you will be able to see how your site will look dressed up in a new theme.

I’ll accept that as a compliment. ≥^!^≤
Thank you.
You know, though, that there is always more to learn…
