implications of google adsense at WP
-
Lets look at it this way, the tests began sometime back in sept. ’06. Just yesterday APRIL 11, 2007, it was brought to my attention by a friend that they had come across ads on my blog after using google.
Point 1: are they still testing them 6 months later
I had never seen an ad prior to that because i have had no reason to search my blog. and how many bloggers actually ever search their blog on google anyway, maybe once or twice? Apparently, you cant log on that way, so what reason would any blogger have to hit their blog using that route.( perhaps to stroke their ego, and how many folks would admit to doing that on a frequent basis? ) Which means for a blogger to log into their account, they would have to go through WP. I am not that tech savy, but I am sure it is not impossible for a system to be in place that would recognize a blogger logged into his/her own account and prevent any ads from appearing on said account. Why is that possible? Yesterday, after I was made aware of these ads, I logged into my account using one computer and had my wife search my blog using google on a different PC. Want to take a quick stab in the dark as to what showed up at the same time on my screen and hers?Point 2: visitors to a blog would not mentioned the Ads placed in them because of the prevelance of adsense. So what, just another blog with ads on it, let me move on. How are they to know the blogger is completely unaware of these ads being there? How many blogs have you come across that say ‘honk if you see an ad’? I was lucky, I have an inquisitive wife other wise I would have been in the dark.
point 3. how would the blogger know exactly how often these ads show up? as far as the blogger is concerned, it might be showing up every single time any blog is googled. however since bloggers do not google their own blogs, or maybe once, and they run into these ads, it is easy for WP to pawn it of as an exception and a random occurrence because it coincides with the infrequency that we google our own blogs. be aware of the fact that on an individual basis it is impossible for us bloggers to know how often these things show up. a blogger network is not in place that keeps track of this.
However if you googled your blog on a frequent basis, that would skewer your blog stats. I am sure most bloggers are honest folk, writing about personal matters and interest and would have no desire to bloat their traffic stats just so they psych themselves into thinking their blog is a popular read? those that do this would not admit it, because they would in effect be admitting their fabrication to themselves. Most bloggers would not want to google their blogs because they would like a fair and precise estimate of the traffic coming through.
considering the 850,000 + blogs on WP and the popularity of the google search engine, my dear WP folks stand to make a pretty penny with none being the wiser.
Kudos WP, it is almost full proof, however what you fail to realize is that sometimes proof is not required. Just the fact that this loophole exists and the possibility that this oversight can be taken advantage of is enough to put a halt on this practice, or bring it out in the open. So in case WP staff is not aware of this little oversight ;), here it is for your reading. That way all can have the opportunity to decide for themselves what should be done.Of all the usual reasons for not wanting an invasion of our blogs w/o our knowledge, this really made me see red. i am willing to move my blog elsewhere if this issue is not addressed. i hope all other reasonable users can understand this and bring about some change. The same thing happens in government and society all the time, innocent folks are taken advantage of. It is tantamount to having a penny skimmed off your account. to you that’s change, but on the whole if a penny is skimmed off 850,000 accounts? well do the math.
If you bring up the fact that WP is free service or any other similar argument, please be prepared to have your baseless opinions challenged and shot down.

Actually, the ads came out of testing in July and Matt made the public announcement that they had been implemented in August. http://wordpress.com/blog/2006/09/06/on-ads/
The reality before you is that you can choose to either:
(1) accept the situation;
(2) try to qualify for a VIP account http://wordpress.com/vip-hosting/
(3) move to self-hosting a wordpress.org blog;
(4) hire a web host and have him or her download a wordpress.org blog;
(5) or move to another blog host.As we are not allowed to discuss wordpress policy matters on the forums (you can confirm this by using the forum search box) you might consider sending in a feedback to staff or an email to support (at) this domain (dot) com for further clarification you may require.

I think that was points 4 and 5 of what TT listed.
If you bring up the fact that WP is free service or any other similar argument, please be prepared to have your baseless opinions challenged and shot down.
Please do the same. This is a support forum, not a policy forum. If you have an issue with a WP.com policy, please take it up in the proper place which would be feedback to staff, not here in the forums.
Any more to this thread will be deleted.
If you want Adsense and adverts on your blog, there’s nothing stopping you from grabbing the software and finding a host. Every host has ToS policies in place, wp.com is no different.
TT, modlook and then move on. Please don’t “Oh you’ve posted this twice.” to folks. It’s not your place to make moderation statements.
