import an existing wordpress site
-
Hi All.
I currently have my website on WordPress, and this week will be parting company with the guy that designed it.
He has kindly exported my website from WordPress (58MB zip file). And will cease to have any involvement with it they Friday.I would like to set up my own WordPress account and upload my website files.
Can anyone let me know how to do this..? I have set up a free account (Although I intend to sign up for a business account) and tried to import it… but it won’t let me…
Can anybody give me a little help… I am used to just FTP’ing my files up in Dreamweaver :)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

So you unzipped the file and tried to use the import function in your new WordPress.com Dashboard, but it failed? Did you get an error message or did the upload start at all? I know if you have a big file, it can hang up or take many hours to complete the upload.

Hi Susan.
Yep, I tried to import from the dashboard, but it says I can only import a .xml file… and there is a lot more to the site than just an xml file :)
Do you think its because I am using the free version… and the pain version has the full import option?
I guess there is no way to just upload files to wordpress via ftp (a la Dreamweaver?) -
I just imported my site with an exported XML file and it worked great, although it rewrites all your link structure for your posts. All my posts, pages, and images were intact. The guidelines say it won’t work for files larger than 15mb, however.
No, there’s no access to the server space at all with WordPress.com. If you really want to have ftp access, you would have to set up another self-hosted WordPress.org site with a hosting provider.
