    I exported my content from my wordpress.com site and have tried to import it to my wordpress.org self hosted site. It keeps saying import failed. What do I do?

    Hello,
    Follow these steps to migrate your blog from WordPress.com to WordPress.org

    • STEP 1: Export Content from WordPress.com
    1. Login to your WordPress.com account and click on the My Site tab on the top, and from the left sidebar menu click on Settings or just go here: https://wordpress.com/settings/general/.
    2. Now click on the Export tab within the settings page.
    3. Then click on, Export All or expand the dropdown and select the content you want to upload.

      4. Wait for few seconds, once the export process is completed – a download link will be generated with a green Download button. Click on it to download your export .ZIP file.

  • STEP 2: Install the WordPress Importer Plugin on your WordPress.org hosted site
    1. Login to your WordPress.org site-admin account. On the sidebar you will find Tools menu, hover on that and click on Import.
    2. You will now see different importer plugins to import specific components like the Comments, Posts etc. Click on the WordPress importer plugin, present at the very bottom of the importers option.
    3. A new window will appear showing the WordPress Importer plugin. This is used to process the XML file created during the importing step and get all of your content migrated, and don’t worry, it’s an official plugin developed by WordPress.org. Now click on Install Now.
    4. You will get a confirmation that the plugin has been downloaded, unpacked and installed without any issues. Now click on “Activate Plugin & Run Importer“.
    5. Again click on the Import option from the Tools menu in the sidebar, this will directly take you to an import page this time. Now click on the blue “Upload file and import” button. Select the exported .ZIP file previously downloaded from WordPress.com
    6. You will now be asked whether you want to create a new user or continue with the previous imported author itself. Create a new login name by enter a new name on the text-box or just select the existing imported author from the drop-down menu.
    7. Finally, check the “Download and import file attachments” option to ensure that all the images and attachments are pulled from WordPress.com to WordPress.org and then click Submit.

    Great! now that’s everything imported – check whether everything is working properly and if everything is imported without any errors as it’s little tricky always to migrate.
