Import content from Hostgater export

    Hi
How can I import a website that had been created with Hostgator? I have the .zip file, but am not sure what option to choose from the import menu as it does not list Hostgator as an option. Any help will be vastly appreciated.

The site I need help with is awakeningcharitabletrustorg.wordpress.com.

Instructions on how to move content from a self-hosted wordpress.org to a free wordpress.com website, https://wordpress.com/support/import/

  • Hi there,

What exactly is in your .zip file?

If it’s .xml files exported from Tools ->Export in the WP-Admin dashboard of your Hostgator site, you can import it using the WordPress importer as indicated above. You should be able to import the .zip folder without unzipping it.

If your .zip folder is a full-site backup provided to you by Hostgator directly, then it cannot be imported to WordPress.com. WordPress.com uses a modified version of the WordPress software that’s different from the version you’re using at Hostgator, and we don’t support doing full-site migrations in this way.

The only way to do a full-site migration to WordPress.com from another host, is through the Jetpack plugin on our Business Plan:
