Import Facebook data?

Facebook has an option in their settings to download all the data of your account. It would be really cool to be able to import the FB data (which includes posts, comments, etc. in a zip file) into my WordPress blog via the importer in the WP admin controls.

Just a thought. Especially now that more and more people are wanting to exit Facebook lately.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on this, and here’s why:

To import content to a Content Management System (CMS) like WordPress, the content needs to be structured in a specific way, essentially a database that is either already compatible with our own database structure, like the .xml files most CMSs use for exports and imports, or something that can easily be converted to the correct structure, like an RSS feed.

I downloaded my Facebook data to check, and it’s neither of those. The download that Facebook gives you is a collection of HTML files and media files, or put differently, it’s just an offline version of your Facebook profile that you can open and view in a web browser. You can get the exact same thing for any website by right-clicking on a site and selecting “Save Page As”.

As such, there is no database whatsoever, so even if we had someone available to build a Facebook importer at this time, the Facebook download does not contain any data in a format that’s possible to import.

Still, I’ll add your suggestion to our list so we can keep an eye on this going forward.
