import failing
-
Hi, I’m migrating from a self hosted instance of wordpress at: http://www.pinhole.org to wordpress.com, for now I’ve called it ‘tmppinhole’ while I figure out if I can move 3000++ images, 700 photographers and galleries to the wordpress.com platform.
Yes, I’m the dude that has run pinhole.org since 1996 and it’s been a wordpress site for several years now. Changes in my work and life have me wanting to move it all to wordpress.com and host on the 299.00/year plan; pinhole.org has a long, long history. Frankly, if we can pull this off and make it work on wp.com it’d be even a little newsworthy.
Anyhow. I created an export form pinhole.org and have tried to upload it to the new site and it’s failed every time. So, help?
Thanks!
Byron

Hi @byron,
I just took a look at your site (thepinholegallery.wordpress.com), and I noticed that you have about 160 posts and just shy of 4,000 images. Does that mean that one of the imports finally went through or is it erroring out for you at some point and not getting everything?
Let me know!

Hi,
What I did was to break down the export from the old site into individual files by type: posts, pages, gallery etc. then import them one at a time into the target site on pinhole.com. It just seems that the 10mb + file was too big or had a syntax error / data error or something. (no real idea).
Next I just have to figure out a way to allow people to upload images to the gallery (the old site uses gravity forms to allow a person to send me images for inclusion in the gallery).
After that, it’s working out how to replace Eaziest gallery using projects/portfolios/galleries etc. (individual photographers have galleries of images and are in effect subscribers / contributors to the gallery.)
Not everything can or will be the same on wordpress.com, but it just may be better. After that, and almost last I have to work out if I should go premium or business. (Not really sure. Thoughts?)
Anyhow, one speed bump down, more to go.

Are you planning on a set group of people who will be uploading to your site? People that you trust? Or is this a general public kind of plan? If the former, it might behoove you to look in to setting them up as authors or the like. That will probably suit you best:

This will probably take some experimentation, but my first inclination is to suggest individual pages for each photographer. They can post their images to their page and have multiple child pages if they so desire for each of their galleries or subject matter.
