import file size

    Hi there! we have a wordpress site that i’ve backed up; our support company lost our domain so i’d like to set up a basic *.wordpress.com site as a temporary until we can buy our domain back in a few weeks.

    I’m trying to import a wordpress backup from Jetpack (.wpstg file); its 2GB; i’m wondering how i can reduce it to import the basics.
    i also have an ‘umbrella-wp’ backup that is 1.GB zip file

    is it possible to import the entire wpstg file?

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hey there,

    Many thanks for reaching out and I’m confident we can help with this.

    So the main issue you have here, is that you’re moving from a self-hosted WordPress installation to WordPress.com installation, and the two work slightly differently.

    For both of the imports that you have, (Jetpack and Umbrella) to import either of those, you would need a WordPress.com Business plan… because you’re importing plugins, as well themes.

    My advice here, would be to sign up to the WordPress.com Business plan, so that you can get the site visible under a temporary (or new) domain…and at best give you a place where the content can be exported to a universal XML file.

    I recommend using Umbrella for the import to start with, rather than Jetpack, mainly because, as the domain is down, you may face Jetpack connection issues. Using Umbrella you may also need Happiness Engineer assistance, but this is expected with moving hosts.

    we can buy our domain back in a few weeks.

    I’d just like to check this – have you got confirmation that this is possible? The reason why I ask is because, it’s not always the case, so you may be best to restore the domain, with a view of connecting it to WordPress.com (https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/) or transferring it (https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/).

    I’m hoping this is useful so far, and if there’s any further information you’re able to provide, this will help us with next steps in getting the site back up and running.

    Speak soon!
