Import Flickr Images To Media Library

  • Unknown's avatar

The recent announcement from SmugMug that they are going to delete photographs on Non-Pro accounts starting next year unless we pay a $50 ransom I’m going to find that my blog’s early posts are going to be left with no photographs and a lot of broken links. Not much use if your blog is about photography.

The reason being I have never made much use of the WP Media Server preferring instead to embed my Flickr photographs into blog posts.

What I’m looking for is a way to take the Flickr photographs and import them into the WP Media Server, reducing the file size at the same time.

I suspect there may be other WP bloggers affected by this problem.

    Please advise

Hi Mike hope you’re keeping well. Unfortunately there is no automatic batch process like that either in Flickr or in WordPress.com.

The only way I know to do this (done it already) is to select and download your photos from the Camera Roll screen over on Flickr. That will generate a zip file with your original size photos. You’d then need to unzip them on your own computer and run them through a photo editing program that does batch resize and optimize. Only then would you be able to upload them to each post and page here on WordPress.com

Painful, I agree. If someone has a different, easier solution, I’d be happy to learn about it too.

There is a solution for wordpress.org users which involves using a plugin. Now I know that it’s not possible here on .com but if enough users are affected by SmugMug’s decision it may be something that the “powers that be” might look into.

Let me tag this for Staff attention and see if they have a suggestion.

  • Hi there,

There has been some internal discussion about this as well as we have many photographers on staff, but there are currently no plans for a bulk-image importer on WordPress.com. I can certainly open a feature request for this, but it’s unlikely it will be added anytime soon, and it definitely won’t be in time for the switch-over on Flickr’s end.

So for your immediate needs the suggestions @justjennifer made above is the only option aside from upgrading so you can use a third-party plugin for this.

Photo optimization tools are a specialized type of software and it’s unlikely something like that will be added to WordPress.com. We have always recommended using dedicated photo editing software to do resizing and optimization prior to uploading images to the library:

    Optimize Your Images

Thanks for requesting that, @kokkieh! Maybe it could something along the lines of the current Google Photos option, since those are also automatically imported to one’s WordPress.com site Media Library? :)

I don’t know if I have the time to do as suggested so let’s assume that I do nothing and wait for Flickr to start deleting images from my account.

Obviously my blog, and I suspect other WP users, are going to have a lot of broken links.

What impact will that have, re Google etc
