import from backup?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am quite possibly a giant idiot, but this is what I am left with. I have a backup file from my old wordpress blog named:
    “happenings_wp_20070127_028[1].sql”

    Now is there ANY way I can make this import? (I tried doing it under ‘import’ but it doesn’t work) Or is all hope lost?

    I am so not techie, so please if there is a way explain it to me in detail and like I am 5…

    I use dreamhost, if this helps.

    I’m sorry I can’t help you. Hopefully another blogger will drop in and help you soon.

    What version of WP do you have on Dreamhost? Versions after about 1.5.2 (I think) come with an “export” feature in the admin panel. If you use that it should save it in a format called eXtended RSS or WXR. That should allow your WP.com blog to import it readily. If you did do that, then I don’t know.

    I have version 2.1 (or whatever the newest is) my old blog is gone (my husband deleted stuff he shouldn’t have) and all I am left with is the backup file.

    Excuse me but it did find some information.

    “It will be useful to those moving between wordpress.com and wordpress.org blogs to know that they need to download the technosailor plugin, upload it to their server, and activate it from their new dashboard in order to import their posts.” http://www.technosailor.com/wordpress-to-wordpress-import/ http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=5099&replies=9

    What you will need to do unfortunetly, is take that mysql backup and put it back into a normal wordpress install. I would double check what version you had, 2.0.x is much different than 2.1 (which has been out only a week). Install it back into the version you had.

    If it was 2.0.X, then you must download the techsailor plugin and then export your entries into the new XML format as that is what you need to import into wordpress.com.

    If you had 2.1, that is even better because that plugin is not needed as it is built into 2.1 by factory rollout! Just export into the XML format.

    It really is import to install the backup into the verison of wordpress that you had before or it will not work!

    Hope that helps.
