Import from GoDaddy Quick Blog

GoDaddy is discontinuing their blog services and has recommended WordPress. I have signed up for a WP account, but when I went to import the GoDaddy blog (from an RSS export) there was no import for RSS. GoDaddy indicated there is some sort of widget to import RSS saved blogs, but I don’t see it. I see RSS widgets, but they don’t seem to be for importing my blog file into WP. Please help!

The only way you can import content into a free blog provided by and free hosted by WordPress.COM is by having an XML file to upload. http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and different http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Godaddy Staff ought to be well aware of the differences between the two and their announcements ought to be crystal clear about which “WordPress” is being referred to.

I found this article about importing GoDaddy’s “Quick Blogcast” content – is this what you are referring to?
The RSS method of importing content mentioned here is indeed a method for importing content into self-hosted WordPress sites, as timethief mentioned above, not WordPress.com sites.
A workaround would be to set up a self-hosted WordPress site, import your GoDaddy content, and then generate a WordPress XML file that you can import here on WordPress.com.
If we develop an importer to bring GoDaddy Quick Blogcast content directly into WordPress.com we’ll let you know here.

I finally was successful transferring my Go Daddy Quickcast blog this morning. The way I was able to do it was to simply export the blog under “post activities” tab in the Go Daddy Blog manager and then import in WordPress using the “Moveable Type” setting and importing the txt. file Go Daddy created. Although I tried this same method last week and it didn’t work…this time it did.
Although, I’m worried about the photos. When the Go Daddy blog goes down at the end of June, will my photos disappear on WordPress? If so any way to prevent this?

We’re working to figure out a better way to facilitate imports from GoDaddy Quickcast to WordPress.com so that all of your content is safe when Quickcast shuts down. I will update this thread as soon as I know more!

If you’re on WordPress.com and the photos are NOT in any of your GoDaddy blog posts, then they will disappear. If I were you I’d take any unattached photos and jam them into a post so that when you do the export they come over. Photos that are in posts can come over.

Quick clarification “raincoaster”…the actually are in my posts and are showing up now in my WordPress post. I was curious if those would now stay in my WordPress posts or would they become somehow “unlinked” when the Go Daddy blog goes down? For myself, not worried about any photos that aren’t already in a post.

They will stay in your WP posts. To confirm, go to the Media Library on your WP.com blog and see them there.
Note that if you merely hotlink photos from elsewhere, ie embed by URL without hosting them yourself, and the blog that actually hosts the photos goes offline, the photos vanish too.

Yeah, on 2nd look they’re all hosted on Go Daddy. When I right click and open an image it opens in a new page as http://images.quickblogcast.com…etc, etc.
Do you think there’s a work around? Download all the images off Go Daddy and re-attach? That would take forever.

They should have come over in the export if you created an export file with images etc. Hm, staff may have to get involved again.

Yeah, see that’s the issue. On the Go Daddy site there’s not a clear way to export with images attached. Go Daddy’s help page suggestion is to export using an RSS method: (http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/5046/export-quickblogcast-to-wordpress)
So far to my knowledge nobody has gotten that method to work. The other export option only makes a text file (which just includes links to the photos).
This obviously isn’t WordPress’ problem, Go Daddy seems to be hosing their customers with this one (shutting down and not providing a clear option for people to move). But any help WordPress folks can provide would really be great. My blog is just minor, but it include all the photos of my kids from birth on… I have all the photos, but my family is really sad that we may lose that whole record. Really sucks.

@chicowildcat – you are correct. The import method you’re describing only brings over text, not images. We’re working on finding a solution that will work for everyone and bring over your images as well.

Having the same problem. I just submitted a request on the forum for help with an RSS Import but now I see this is not possible yet :(
Yep, chicowildcat is right; GoDaddy is hosing us with this one. I had QuickBlog cast as part of a package deal I pay for. Now their solution is to pay extra over and above that for them to host a WordPress blog since they are eliminating the one I got “free” with the package. They keep eliminating stuff out of my package deal, but the price stays the same.

I stopped using GoDaddy for photos when I started getting a lot of traffic. I since moved stuff over to Photobucket, when I now import into my blog. Hopefully this might survive my import.
I do worry because the deadline is June 25, 2014! I have a bunch of posts to transfer.

I tried that and it worked. I realize though I will lose all my pictures once GoDaddy Quick Blogcast goes down, but at least I saved the content for now. Luckily I don’t have so many posts I can’t just reload the images, at least the most important ones.
It did oddly load a bunch of spam comments that were not approved comments on the old blog, which I had to manually go in and set as spam. It was a pain but there were few enough to manage. One benefit of having a relatively inactive blog to transfer I guess.
