Import from Xanga finished, not showing most pages

I am trying to import a xanga blog to wordpress. Xanga exported the blog in 6 files. I imported them one at a time, and each time it said, ‘Your WordPress content import for http://dankster312.wordpress.com was successful.’ However, most of the blogs are missing. It appears that the first file from Xanga had my blog’s name, and files 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 had all the content. Only the content from file 3 (99 posts) appears on my wordpress blog in either the public view or dashboard, even though all 6 imports claimed to be successful. I tried to re-import one of the ones that didn’t show, it said it was successful again, and it still doesn’t show. It’s been 48 hours since I started. What is the next step.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hello!

Having a look at others here with similar issues. The first option seems to be trying a fresh export from Xanga, and importing following these directions.

If that doesn’t work, search for ‘Xanga’ on the support page.. under Forum there’s a number of other posts with the same issue. You might find the solution there.

I’m tagging this post with ‘modlook’ to grab the attention of WordPress staff.

Hope that helps, and good luck!

  • Hi there,

Xanga files sometimes don’t import correctly. Please try re-importing them. Creating a new export also can’t hurt.

You can also try importing them using the WordPress importer rather than the Xanga importer. But I can’t really suggest more than that.

    So here’s what I did:

    #1: Created a new export

#2: Deleted my webpage and carefully imported it over again, one file at a time, from the new export.

#3: The first content file from the xanga import loaded, but the 2nd failed, just like before (even though I imported a different file first this time). It didn’t “say” it failed, I got a success message just like before. But nothing showed up.

#4: I tried to import it through WordPress importer instead. That worked! I uploaded all the files through WordPress importer.

#5: However, I noticed that at one point when I numbered a series, the posts in the middle were missed. 8 posts in 8 days gone. So I re-imported the same file through xanga, through wordpress…nothing changed.

#6: I edited the file to leave just the piece that had been omitted (along with the introductory parts). I tried to import it. I got an error. Tried a different xml editor, and checked the validity. It said it was a good file. Still got the error when importing.

So not sure what to do now. I can see the files in the xml file. But they don’t reach my blog. There are probably others that were left out too.

  • #2: Deleted my webpage

Why did you do that? Deleting a WordPress.com site is permanent, and you won’t be able to re-use that address again. You could just have imported the new files into the existing site – the importer won’t re-import any content that’s already there.

To what site are you importing now?

The only other suggestion I can make is to try running the import again in a different browser, though I’d recommend using the original file rather than the one you edited. If it still won’t work there’s likely an error in the file that, while it doesn’t make the XML invalid, does make it incompatible with our importer. In that case you’ll need to manually copy those posts over.

Also note that your images aren’t imported from Xanga. This is due to a limitation on their end. So while your WordPress.com site will show your images, the images themselves are still hosted with Xanga. If you want the images hosted here you’ll need to manually upload them to the various posts.

I deleted the original page because I was concerned that perhaps some sort of corruption in the original import was blocking the subsequent imports. I wasn’t wedded to the URL so I was okay with deleting it.

The thing that would suck about manual copy is that I lose all the comments. The comments are pretty important to me. I’d like to know how to figure out what the error might be and edit it, but obviously I don’t know how to edit into a workable file yet.

  • I’m afraid I don’t know enough about XML to help you there.

Does Xanga give the option to only export posts for a certain date range? Perhaps try to export only those specific posts.

And before you do that, go through those posts on Xanga and make sure they don’t contain any weird or invalid HTML code, iframes, embedded JavaScript, etc, and delete any comments that are very low quality or possible spam.
