Import from Xanga incomplete
-
I imported XML files from my Xanga blog but noticed that not all the images were transferred. How do I get the remaining images to appear on my WordPress blog?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m sorry but I don’t have an answer to your question. I tagged this thread for a Staff response. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond.

HI @baahlkie,
It does appear as though the source URL for the images are still pointed back to your Xanga address. Is that address still active? Would it be possible for you to try to export the Xanga site again and re-import it into WordPress.com? The blog posts will not be duplicated, but hopefully, this will pull over the Media Files.
-
Please note, you may receive multiple export files from Xanga. You will need to import all of the files for all content to be moved to WordPress.com.
We have additional instructions here:

Hi @jeremeylduvall,
You’re right, the images are still hosted on the Xanga. The account is still active and in fact I can see the images on that Xanga account. I’ll try exporting from Xanga/re-importing to WordPress again. Do you know if there’s a way for the images to be transferred as well when importing the XML files?
Yes, I imported all 4 of the XML files.
-
The images should be pulled in with the XML files automatically. When you import an XML file, we look at the src URL and download the media file to your Media Library. Let me know if the re-import doesn’t work!

My images disappeared from my files from Xanga recently. (They have been there for several months and suddenly disappeared.) Like the above poster, they are still active on Xanga.
If i reimport, will i lose my WordPress blog that i have posted since my Xanga files or will they remain? I’d hate to lose those in the process!

Hi @superbuds4life – Could you point me to a URL on your site where you’re missing images?
-
@jeremylduvall, one of the posts with a missing photos is https://superbuds4life.wordpress.com/2014/07/13/hes-come-a-long-way-baby/
(it’s set to private right now, do i need to change the setting for you to see it?)
TIA!

Nope! I can see the post without you changing the privacy status.
The issue here is that the image source URL (where we’re grabbing the image) is still pointing to Xanga. You’ll see the following code if you look at the HTML in the Text Editor for that post:
<img src="//superbuds.files.xanga.com/2014/07/100_5319-1024x768.jpg" alt="100_5319" width="640" height="480" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-5583">Ideally, when you ran the export/import process at WordPress.com, we should have brought over the images and changed all of the source URLs in your posts.
Three follow-up questions:
- Is your Xanga site still up and running? When I visit the source URL for that image, I’m coming up with a broken page
- Do you see the image(s) that are supposed to be in that post in your Media Library?
- Could you point me to one more post that has broken images just for comparison?
We’ll get this figured out!

Thank you SO MUCH working with me on this @jeremylduvall! I so appreciate it!
1) Yes, my xanga is still up and running. When they moved over to 2.0 though, i am missing about 1/2 of my photos. :( I’m still trying to get them to get them back for me so i can have a complete blog back. (So sad about this….) The ones that i’m missing in my recently posts on WordPress though are the ones that i had blogged on 2.0 and THEN transferred over to WordPress. They did show up in WordPress until just recently…
2) The images are NOT in my media Library. (But they do still show up over in Xanga. If i remember correctly, those never showed up in the media library.
3) Here’s another post that has missing photos. (But i believe it’s all the ones since 2.0. Just odd how they’ve been there and now are not.) https://superbuds4life.wordpress.com/2014/07/12/summer-bedtime/
Thank you again for your help. VERY (!) appreciated!!!

Hi Becky,
The images are NOT in my media Library. (But they do still show up over in Xanga. If i remember correctly, those never showed up in the media library.
Thanks for clarifying! The issue here is that if the files are no longer available on Xanga, we’re unable to pull them over in an import. Then, the source URLs for the images will still point to Xanga.
Here’s a proposed game plan going forward:
1. Can you let me know what’s preventing the images from showing up at Xanga?
2. Can you try running the import once last time? You’ll likely see a ton of “Already exists” error messages. Posts and current media library items will not duplicate. But, the missing images should be imported in.

Hey @jeremylduvall. I think i said something wrong. The photos i’m referring to (since xanga 2.0) are still showing up on xanga. Just disappeared from wordpress. They are NOT showing up on media library in wordpress.
Question: If i import from Xanga again, will i lose my new posts that i’ve made on wordpress? I would really (!) hate to lose those!!!!
As far as what is preventing my older images from Xanga from showing up…(from Xanga 1.0) I believe i just had too many photos? It never archived when they shut it down and they assured me it would transfer over with 2.0. It didn’t. :( I’m missing about 1/2 the photos. Here i am, nearly a year and a half later, still trying to get them back on my blog… (Still hopeful.) I’m pretty sure there’s not anything you guys can do about that since it’s a Xanga issue. I wish… ;)
But, if you can help me get the photos that were showing up on WordPress and have recently disappeared, that would be so nice! Just want to make sure that by re-importing, i won’t lose any of my WordPress posts that i have made since those posts. (Does that make sense? I imported my Xanga stuff then picked up from there and started blogging on WordPress…)
THANKS AGAIN!!!

Nope! Your posts will not be removed. Let’s try this import one more time and see if those images will come over!
