import my wordpress from dreamhost

  hello,
  i have a wordpress blog that is hosted on dreamhost.com
  it has high number of active daily users; and hosted on my own domain

  my database is approximately 800 MB
  images/videos around 1.2 GB
  and a lot of plugins i have installed…
  how feasible is it for me to move my blog to wordpress.com to ‘staging.mydomain.com’ and once all is up and running; i change the cname in my registrar from staging.mydomain.com to mydomain.com.

  i read in your support page tht i just need to export an ‘xml file’ and import it on my account here with a premium plan; but how does that import my media files and database?

  any help would be greatly appreciated

  Hi rollyah,

  and a lot of plugins i have installed…

  You won’t be able to use 3rd party plugins on WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/

  You’ll need to purchase the Domain Mapping Upgrade: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

  how does that import my media files and database?

  As mentioned on the Support page: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/3/

  “After you upload the file, you can choose the option to Download & import file attachments if you want to move your media files.”

  You won’t need to import your self-hosted WordPress database when moving to WordPress.com

  that surely help alot; now i have a clearer picture.. thank you!
  though i have more questions if you don’t mind:

  – i noticed there’s a cap on 15 MB for the xml file; that is not related to the subsequent step of importing media files.. correct?

  – Concerning the DB part; wordpress does its voodoo and i’ll have my fully functioning wordpress as long as i import that xml file plus my media. correct?

  – Is there a limit on hits ? i have a 4 GB of ram /2 cores server which i have wordpress hosted on; and at some times when a post goes viral it’s simply not enough… will my users be throttled or any sort of deterioration of traffic when that happens ?

  – if i started with premium plan; is it easy to switch to business ?

  – how frequent is my data backedup; should i invest in an external backup service?

  i apologize for having many questions but i need to make an educated decision if i upgrade my existing server or simply move to wordpress.com
