Import of site creates menus with duplicate menu items
-
In creating an import and then exporting to a brand new mirror site, I have found that all of the menus created on the mirror site have duplicate items, i.e. if menu 1 has four items on the original site, say, A B C D, then after doing an export and import to the mirror site, menu 1 is created but now has 8 items i.e. A A B B C C D D. As there are 24 individual menus on the original site this is a right nuisance as I have to go into each of the menus and zap every second item. This is my second attempt at an export / import. The same thing happened on the first attempt which I put down to me mucking up. This time I had the mirror site all set up with the same theme and style sheet in place as the original and I still end up with duplicate menu items. Am I doing something wrong?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

On further checking the 24 menus, I found that roughly one third had all of their menu items duplicated, one third had some of the menu items duplicated (no discernable pattern) and the final third had no duplications. This would suggest that the problem lies not in the export / import but in some foible associated with the menu as originally created. Any ideas as I think I’m starting to go insane???

Hi there,
Let’s see if I can help you out with this.
What are the source and destination URLs? In other words, what is the blog you are exporting, and what is the blog address for the import? Are they both WordPress sites?
Did you attempt multiple imports into the same blog?

Hi Jackie, the export site is http://rmdservice.com/ which is in reality a wordpress site http://rmdsie.wordpress.com/ and the target site is http://rmdsmirror.wordpress.com/. I’ve gone through the menus and taken off the duplicates and got the copy configured so it kind of looks the same as original. I need to do a demo to the users to convince them if someone somehow deleted the real site by accident or whatever that we can rebuild it easy enough from an export file. The absence of widgets from the export file makes it a bit of a pain enough without there being a problem with the menus too. I’m wrapping up for the day now as it’s getting late in Ireland. I’ll come back to it tomorrow. Any advice welcome. Might have to set up another mirror site and try again!

Okay, so what it sounds like you did was export one WordPress.com site and import it into a new WordPress.com site.
You’re correct that widgets do not get bundled up in an export. Nor do custom menus or anything involving the theme or customizations. Imports between WordPress.com sites, or between WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress sites, include only posts, pages, comments, images/media, and categories & tags.
Since you’ve fixed up the menu now, it’s hard to know for sure what happened, but if you did more than one import, the menu might well have been duplicated. Using a custom menu should resolve that.
Please let me know if you have any other questions pertaining to your demo or for your users. Also please let them know that if they are hosted on WordPress.com, there are folks like myself, as well as forums volunteers, who are always happy to help new (or experienced!) users with our platform. We also have tutorials and support documentation, and if you want more information about any of that, or anything else, just let me know.

Hi, I’m a bit confused now. I realise that widgets just don’t come through in the export and consequently, the custom menu widgets don’t come across as they are widgets. My problem is with the actual menu structures (which are included in an export). There are 24 menu structures on the original site. After the export and import to the mirror site the same 24 menu structures are on the mirror site. The problem is that the structure of pages, post and links within these menu structures is not the same as existed on the original site due to some of the items being duplicated in some of the menu structures. Of the 24, approx 8 had all of the items in the structure duplicated, so that for instance a menu structure of
A
A1
A1a
A2
A2a
A2b
B
Cin the original site, had in the mirror site a structure of
A
A1
A1a
A2
A2a
A2b
A
A1
A1a
A2
A2a
A2b
B
B
C
COther menu structures had only some of their items duplicated, e.g.
A
A
B
C
C
D
DWhilst other menu structures had no duplication and came over as they were on the original site.
Any idea as to what caused this?

I’m sorry you’re having these issues with the menus.
Keep in mind that custom menus will need to be generated for each new site. If you do an import into an existing site, you may also need to tweak the menus, especially if a number of new pages have been added with the import.
Having said that, it’s difficult to fully understand what may have happened without being able to see it on your site. If you do a new import, could you let me know if you experience this issue again, so I can take a look and see if I can figure out what happened?

Hi, so can I take it that the menus should have created just as they were on the original site? Without duplicates. I’ll probably give it another go and see what happens.

There should not be menu item duplicates unless you have duplicate pages. If this isn’t the case, I’d like to know about it so I can take a further look.
Note that by default the main menu will include all pages, and not likely in the order you intended, so that’s why a Custom Menu is going to be essential for your purposes.
