import posts with media to wordpress.com
-
I am trying to import posts with media from my site http://bermudastream.com/ to https://bermudastream.wordpress.com/ without any luck. I’ve been using the import / export function and XML files. Thanks in advance Mark M.

What is the size of the XML file, please?
Is the site you have the XML export file from still online?
If yes, what is the URL?Sometimes the importer gets stuck. If the file is large you may have to import Posts, Pages, etc. in separate files. Or if the file is very large Staff may have to do the import.

Hi Mark,
I can see there are over a 1000 posts on this site now – https://bermudastream.wordpress.com. Did you manage to import those successfully? Let me know if you still need a hand. We can run the import for you at this end if you’re still having problems.

Hi Guys
xml file for posts only is 9791 kb
xml file for all site data pages, posts, etc is 14635 kB

The posts have imported well except for the media relative to featured images
Thnx
@rachelsquirrel If you can get the media files to transfer would be great or if you would want to do a clean transfer i can delete everything

Hi there,
I’ve just sent you an email. If you can reply with the xml file for media I’ll try running the import at this end.
The media export file just contains the image links – hence the small size – but they’ll be uploaded at the time of import provided they are accessible on the original site.

Hmm. I can’t see a reply in our system. Can you give it another try? Maybe the xml file is too big? We can only accept emails with 15MB attachments. Try exporting the file in parts and sending them separately.

Hi Rachel
I’ve managed to import all media files now BUT they haven’t been assigned as the featured image of the relative post. I used a different blog address https://berstream.wordpress.com/ I could manually fix the featured images issue but as there are almost 1000 posts that would be a bit of a nightmare. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi Mark,
I’ve just asked our developers whether we can run a script to do this for you. I’ll let you know what they say. In the meantime can you let me know whether the blog (https://berstream.wordpress.com/) was empty when you first ran the importer?

Hi there!
Our developers have managed to add the featured image to 370 posts but they couldn’t do any more than this, sorry. For some reason the remaining posts don’t have a matching image in the wxr file. There’s either something not quite right in the wxr file or your original theme has some custom settings that we do not support.
I had a look at your site and the majority of posts on the main page have a featured image now – https://berstream.wordpress.com

Hi Rachel
I appreciate what you guys have done but that is a still a little bit of a nightmare for me! 600+ posts to go through and associate the featured image. I’ve done something very similar before and it gives me that uneasy feeling of serious crisis management :-(
I would like to move my main site content onto the worpress.com network with a registered doamin domain to begin with but I can’t do it with so much work to do off the bat.
I didn’t choose a default theme such as twenty sixteen when I imported. Perhaps that has something to do with it. I can also switch over to default theme before exporting and try again. Also I could contact the theme developers

Hi Mark,
If you want to try running the export again then I’d recommend switching to the default theme on your original site first. Export the content and then try importing that to your WordPress.com site. From what our developers said your theme was using something fairly custom – _video_thumbnail – to set those featured images.
-
Yes I will try to run the export again with default themes BUT not on the site berstream.wordpress.com where wp happiness englineers have succeeded in adding a third of the featured images. :-)
I would like to run it at https://bermudastream.wordpress.com but I’m having a hard time deleting posts. Is there a maximum number that can be deleted at one time? Could you delete all the content there for me. Thanks
Yes I have been using https://wordpress.org/plugins/video-thumbnails/ to grab and create featured images.
I wouldn’t have thought that once the images had been captured and set as featured there would be any difference.Perhaps the dates are the problem. When I export the media as xml file I can only go back as far as December 2015 while my first post dates back to January 2011? (I believe this difference in dates is due to a restore of images after the site was seriously hacked in 2015)
-
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I can delete all the content but I see you’ve already done it :)
Regarding the images, it could be either of those issues – the plugin or the change in dates. What happens if you disable the plugin on your self-hosted site? Are the images still there?
